She is preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Lydia Stolzenbach, all five brothers and sisters, and her first husband, Edward J. Knitter, who died in 1985. She was born August 30, 1926 in Beecher, IL, married Edward in 1948 in Grant Park, IL, and moved to the Kansas City area in 1956 where she spent the rest of her life. She and Edward operated the Grandview Roller Rink for 18 years until 1978. They became interested in collectibles and antiques in the early 1970s. She became an antique dealer, an occupation which continued to be her passion for the rest of her life. In 1997, she married Gene Cunningham who joined her in doing antique shows all over the country until her dementia forced them to retire in 2011. Irene was a Lutheran throughout her life. She is survived by her loving husband Gene, her son Bob Knitter and wife Judy, her daughter Bonnie Hubler and husband Richard, and four grandchildren Ashley, Lindsey, Ryan and Chris Knitter. The family is grateful to St. Luke's Hospice staff for their care and support. Services will be in the chapel at Mt. Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Rd, on Saturday, January 26. Visitation will be at 12:00 p.m., followed by the funeral at 1:00 p.m. A reception will be held at Mt. Moriah & Freeman immediately after the service. There will not be a graveside service.

Lillian was born June 25, 1914 in Fulda, MN to Fred and Rose Stancer. During her early years, her parents farmed in many rented places in Eastern South Dakota and Southwest Minnesota. She got an 8th grade education. Later, Lillian went to Beauty School in St. Paul, MN and worked in a beauty salon. Lillian was united in marriage to Carl Jerome Kahnke on September 16, 1941 in Redwood Falls, MN. He then served in World War II and she became an avid life long member of the Ladies Auxiliary. Lillian worked in a bakery and a Dime Store during that time. After the war, they moved to Ogema, MN and raised four girls while Lillian settled down to being a farm wife for 26 years. They then moved to Hector, MN for 33 years to help her aging parents. Carl died when they were both 86 and when she was 93, she knew she needed to be by family. Lillian has lived in Staples, MN for 10 years.

Lillian is survived by her daughters, Rose Mary (Mike) Blessing of Staples, MN, Clara (Jerry) Zeller of Clara City, MN, Mary (Brad) Karg of Glencoe, MN, Susan (Bob) Baker of Ogema, MN; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and one step-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carl; three infant grandchildren; two infant great grandchildren; and two brothers. Arrangements have been entrusted to Brenny Funeral Chapel in Staples, MN.
