He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in France, Belgium, and Germany. On Sept. 29, 1953, he married Marian R. Cooper at St. Charles Parsonage, Cassville. They farmed for many years near Cassville before moving to Lancaster in 1972.

He enjoyed his large vegetable garden, playing cards, and loved spending time with his family.

Surviving are five children, Carol (Greg) Schramm, Lancaster, Pete (Debbie) Glassmaker, Patch Grove, Tim (Kim) Glassmaker, Bloomington, Kathy (Dan) Rice, Fennimore, and Cindy (Tim) Ackerman, Lancaster; 12 grandchildren; a great-grandson; a sister, Helen (Art) Pickel, Potosi; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marian, on June 24, 2002; his parents; three brothers, Ambrose, Clifford and Sylvester Glassmaker; and a sister, Elizabeth Craig.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at ST. CLEMENT CATHOLIC CHURCH, Lancaster with Monsignor Daniel Ganshert officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Blake's Prairie Cemetery, Bloomington township.

Together they lived at the same house where he was born and raised for 92 years.

Helen is survived by her three children, Bernice (Darrel) Ellis of Lancaster, Leroy Pickel (friend, Carol Scot), and Arleen (Dennis) Walter both of Potosi; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Adeline Brunton of Platteville; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Art; two sons, Clifford and John; a granddaughter, Jennifer; a daughter-in-law, Gloria;

Funeral services were held at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Tennyson. Burial was held at St. Mary's Settlement Cemetery, Town of Cassville.
