Amy Withrow The June 7, 1916, obituary for Amy Withrow's father, George Withrow, states she was 'a prominent teacher in the public schools of Kansas City Missouri.' The death certificate for Amy Withrow shows she died September 25, 1918,at her residence at 1830 Calumet Avenue, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. It shows she was a single white female age about 47 whose occupation had been as a school teacher. The informant was F. W. Craft, 69 West Washington Street, probably Chicago, Illinois, whose relationship to her is unknown. It shows she was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and shows that her parents George and Mary were also born in Kansas City. The place of burial or removal is shown as Kansas City, Missouri. The information about the cause of death is hard to read but appears to be suicide. An inquest was held. The certificate was filed September 26,1918. No death notice or obituary was found for Amy Withrow in the 'Chicago Daily Tribune' in September 1918. Chicago, Illinois, newspapers printed paid death notices and only a very few obituaries. There were many deaths at that time due to both World War I and the influenza epidemic. She may be the 'Patty' Withrow, age 9, born in Iowa, listed in the 1880 U.S. Census Soundex for Harrison Town, Grant County, Wisconsin (Volume 10, ED 107, Sheet 19, Line 2) listed with her parents George and Mary Withrow and sisters Grace, Bertha, and Anna. The 1926 'History of William Withrow' by Nellie Stanton shows Amy Withrow had been educated at the State Normal school at Platteville, Wisconsin, and had been a school teacher in Grant County, Wisconsin. After her father, George Withrow, joined the gold rush to the Klondike region in Alaska in 1896, his wife and daughters, of whom the youngest was Mary Belle, aged twelve years, moved to Chicago, where Amy, the oldest child, taught in the Chicago public schools. The second, Grace, became secretary to the postmaster, and the two youngest engaged in art work. Bertha attained remarkable success as a portrait artist. Grace died in Phoenix, Arizona, 1903, and Bertha in San Antonio, Texas, 1907. It shows Amy Withrow died in Chicago, Illinois, on September 25, 1918, and is buried in Kansas City beside her mother.

1917In 1917 GEHRT ENGELBRECT
Gehrt Engelbrecht, on of the well-known and successful famers in Meadowntownship, Plymouth county, was born in Holstein, Germany on December 25, 1851, the son of Gehrt and Katie (Severin) Engelbrecht. The parents were also natives of that country and there received their education in the public schools, and after their marriage established themselves on a farm where they resided to the end of their lives, dying in their native land some years ago. They were active members of the German Lutheran church and took much interest in all church work, and were prominent in the local society in the community in which they lived and where they were held in the highest regard and esteem by all. They were the parents of ten children as follow: Jacob, Gehrt, Anna, Jacob, John, Frank, Herman, Henry and two who died in infancy. Of the children, three came to America, Henry, Frank and Gehrt. Henry is a successful farmer in Meadow township and Frank is a resident of Mitchell, South Dakota.
Gehrt Engelbrecht was educated in the public schools of his native country and there grew to manhood, and remained a resident of that country until he was twenty-eight years of age. In 1880 he came to America. On his arrival in the United States he proceeded to Holstein, Wisconsin, where he remained for one year and was engaged as a farm hand. He then located in Benton county, Iowa, where he remained for five years and then moved to Sioux county, where he lived for twelve years.
In 1891 Gehrt Engelbrecht was united in marriage to Amanda Wickhorst, a native of Holstein, Germany, and who came to America, the year that she was married. To this union ten children have been born as follow: William, Katie, John, Annie, Charles, Herman, Emil, Alfred, Alma and Vera. William married Anna Grapke and is a successful farmer and stockman of Sioux county, Iowa; Katie is the wife of Henry Rann, a successful and well-to-do farmer of Meadow township, Plymouth county; John is working on a farm in Sioux county; Annie is the wife of George Kantz, a well-known resident of Canostota, South Dakota, and the other children are at home with the parents.
Soon after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Engelbrecht established their home in Sioux county and were there engaged in general farming for ten years. They then came to Plymouth county, where they purchased one hundred and sixty acres of land in section 15, Meadow township. The tract was at that time partially improved and developed, but since that time the present improvements have for the most part been placed by Mr. Engelbrecht, and today he has one of the nicely improved places in the township. The farm has been increased and he is now the owner of three hundred and twenty acres of splendid land, all under a high state of cultivation.
