Thomas Hicks was eighteen when he first arrived in Grant County, Dakota Territory. Until then he lived on a farm in Ontario, Canada, where he was born. He was the son of John and Letitia (Cunningham) Hicks.

In 1882 he helped move his family to Michigan. Then he went on west with his father and sister to help establish the tree claim in Grant County to which they all moved in the spring of 1883. Thomas helped farm until 1893, when he left to study at the Chicago School of Veterinary Medicine. After graduation he returned to Milbank and opened an office behind the Milbank Bank building (now the Grant County Review newspaper). A spring 1894 issue of the Review reports: "Hicks Bros. is the style and title of a new firm in this city" and went on to say that Dr. Hicks and his brother Robert shared office space. Dr. Hicks had his veterinary practice and R. J. had a Real Estate, Insurance and Loan business. The paper indicates, "Dr. Hicks is fully equipped with a knowledge of the business and a full line of surgical instruments to attend to all calls in his line."

Thomas moved to a farm close to Milbank in 1902. June third of that year he married Anna Croal. They raised five children: John, Mary (Mrs. Iver Hovland), Paul, Thomas, and Kathryn (Mrs. Clarence Lund). Dr. Hicks kept up an active veterinary practice during these years and served as State Veterinarian from 1904 to 1913. He was regarded as a fine animal surgeon throughout South Dakota and surrounding states.

The Hicks moved to the family farm in Melrose Township in 1914. Thomas was a member of the Woodmen and Masonic Lodges. Later in life he was elected County Commissioner, serving for twelve years. He was regarded as a father figure throughout the county, willing to help anyone in any way he could. He was called "County Father" by some.

At age seventy-one he was interested in doing some work for the state that required him to take the State Veterinary exam at Pierre. He passed Examen cum Laude with a score of ninety-five. He began his work and continued to be active in it until his unexpected death December 14, 1935, while making tuberculosis tests of cattle in Roberts County.
Dr. Thomas Henry Hicks was a veterinarian; State Veterinarian from 1904 to 1913.
1882He immigrated in 1882.
1883Andover, Day, South DakotaHe lived in 1883 at Andover, Day, South Dakota, made homestead.

PATRICK H. PRUNTY, a well-known citizen of Outagamie county, was born in Province Connaught, Ireland, and came to the United States with his brother, Peter, in 1845, when nineteen years of age, settling near Boston, Massachusetts, where he secured employment on farms. In 1851 the brothers started for Californiia, via the Isthmus of Panama, making their way by foot across to the Pacific coast, where they took a vessel. After spending three years in placer mining they returned over the same route, and remained in Boston during the winter of 1855, when they came to Outagamie county, via Milwaukee. Patrick H. Prunty bought the south onehalf of section 15, Town 22, range 16 east, in Ellington township.

His brother Peter also purchased a quarter section of land north of the town of Stephensville. Patrick H. Prunty sold the east onehalf of the southeast quarter of section 15 later on, and still later disposed of another eighty acres, but continued to hold 200 acres, which he developed from a wild waste of timber land on which only a small claim shanty had been built, into a fertile, productive farm with large residence, handsome barns and other farm buildings.

On July 18, 1858, he was married to Anna Haffnier, who was born in County Tipperary, Ireland, and came to this country when three years of age in 1837, with her father and mother, John and Nora (Dwyer) Haffnier, who came. to this county in 1848 and settled in Greenville township, where both died. Mr. and Mrs. Prunty have been the parents of ten children, as follows: Peter S., who met an accidental death while operating a threshing machine in South Dakota, August 29, 1885, at the age of twenty-seven years; John H., who died in 1902, when forty-three years old; Patrick L., residing in Canada; Mary J., who married J. P. Crow and lives in South Dakota; Nora E., who married Frank Sheelar, of South Dakota; Michael E., unmarried and living on the homestead; Catherine, who is keeping house for her father in Appleton; Francis T., who married Agnes Corney and lives at Bear Creek; James, living on the homestead; and Anna E., teaching in the Third Ward school, Appleton, Wisconsin.5

1918In 1918 MICHAEL E. CROAL. The Croal family belongs among the old timers of Washington Township, where they established their home in pioneer times and where a large amount of land was cleared and made productive through their efforts. The founders of the family here were John and Catherine (Daily) Croal, the former a native of County Leitrim and the latter of County Roscommon, Ireland. They came to Sauk County in 1856 and located on forty acres of raw land in Bear Creek Township. Later the father acquired another forty acres in Washington Township, partly cleared and improved, and though a blacksmith by trade and conducting a shop for a number of years, he managed to get his land under cultivation and was one of the well known citizens of that community. John Croal died in 1874, his widow surviving him until May 27, 1911. They were the
parents of eight children: John; Andrew, now deceased; Thomas; Joseph; Mary; Katherine; Jennie, now deceased; and Michael E. Michael E.
