He attended the Parochial School of the St John's Lutheran church in Loganville, and he became a member of this church.
Most of his early life was spent on a farm.
However, he also belonged to the Reedsburg Fire Department, and came to Reedsburg by bicycle to answer the fire alarm many times.
He also spent some time in comparatively early life working for the Townsend Brothers of Reedsburg.
He was married to Emma Rathjen on Oct 13, 1901, and to this union were born five children: Henry and August, both of Rock Springs; Mrs Hilbert Kleeber, of Reedsburg; Mrs Ed Sonnenberg of Milwaukee, and Fred of Beaver Dam.
Mr Horstmann was a member of the choir of the Loganville Lutheran church.

Mrs Horstmann died Oct 1, 1934, and her husband continued on the farm for another 14 or 15 years, before he came to live with mrs Kleeber in Reedsburg in 1950.

He had been gradually failing in health, though he found great joy in passing his 90th birthday in November, 1959.

He died on Saturday, Oct 8, and he is survived by the five children named above; one sister, Mrs P H Peper; one brother, Frederick, both of Madison; 27 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Phelps funeral home on Monday, Oct 10 at 2:30 p.m with the Rev Paul B White officiating, and burial was in Greenwood cemetery.1

He was born Nov. 14, 1940, in Reedsburg, to Rhinehart and LaVita (Meyer) Hasz and was raised in Loganville, Wisconsin. He served in the U.S. Marines from 1958 until 1961. He volunteered for both the Baraboo and Columbus Fire Departments. Roger was also a member of the Baraboo Elks Club, American Legion Post 62 and served on the Faith Lutheran Church board where he was a member. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, cooking and spending time with his friends and family. He will be missed by everyone who knew him.

Survivors include his son, Ryan (Jody) Hasz of Cambridge; his daughter, Jodie Hasz-Aguero of Baraboo; three grandchildren, Jason Lange, Stephany Hasz and Kera Birch; one sister, Linda (Harlow) Jarvis of Reedsburg; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m., on Thursday, Sept. 20, at Faith Lutheran Church, 120 Faith Drive, Columbus. The Rev. Mark Petersen will officiate. Full military honors by American Legion Post 62 will follow. Interment will be in St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery in Loganville.

Esther Ebsen was born on April 11, 1925, at Vermillion to Peter and Serena (Christensen) Ebsen. She graduated from Centerville High School in 1943. She then moved to Portland, Ore., and welded ships for the war effort. She had many jobs throughout her life, but had a career at Ven Sioux Distilled Water in Sioux Falls in the sales and warehouse department. She married Myron Abraham on Nov. 26, 1965, at Sioux Falls. She did volunteer work at the VA Hospital, where she received an award for 11 years of service.

She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and RSVP, and was a supervisor at the county courthouse polls during elections.

Survivors include two sons, James (Terry) Colwell of Topeka, Kan., and Gary (Sheri) Colwell of Sioux Falls; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Wayne (Betty) Ebsen of Pipestone, Minn., and Curtis (Virginia) Ebsen of Madison; two sisters, Emma Flanery of Rapid City, and Mary Ann (Jim) Hyland of Madison.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Myron; two brothers, Leonard and John Ebsen; and a sister, Anne Willenburg.
