Alvern Edward Molskow was born in Sioux City on Nov. 2, 1915, to Edmund and Bertha (Jamtgaard) Molskow. He attended Sioux City schools and graduated from East High School. After high school he joined the Sioux City Fire Department. He was also the first Sioux City fireman to enlist following the attack on Pearl Harbor. He served in the United States Marine Corps until April 23, 1945, after completing combat duty on Iwo Jima. Following his return home, he rejoined the Sioux City Fire Department until March 18, 1973, when he retired at the rank of Assistant Fire Chief. Al eloped with his wife, Colleen Lee Connell, on Dec. 20, 1955. After his retirement he worked part-time and helped his wife win several elections as Clerk of the District Court. When Colleen retired, they volunteered and traveled. Together they supported the Goodwill, the Museum Guild and the Scandinavian Society. Al was a lifelong Lutheran, attending Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Sioux City. He was an amateur photographer, leaving behind many negatives of floods, fires, fire department activities and family events. Survivors include his wife, Colleen of South Sioux City; sister Darlene and James Arthurs of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; brother-in-law Wayne and Betty Johnson of Sioux City; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Bernice Satterfield and Dorothy Johnson. Al was a devoted husband, family man, gentleman, Lutheran and patriot.
