Marriage30 December 1978Charlotte Ruth Newkirk married George Alois Bindl, son of Alois Alferd Bindl and Clara T. Lins, on 30 December 1978.
Death22 March 2023Charlotte Ruth Newkirk died on 22 March 2023 at age 97 Charlotte Bindl, 97, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2023 at the Richland Hospital. Charlotte was born in 1925 at her Grandmother Newkirk’s log cabin near Pleasant Ridge, Wisconsin. Her parents were Willard Newkirk and Dora Maude (Fuller) Newkirk. Her siblings and their spouses include Naomi (Clyde) Johnson, Oliver (Betty) Newkirk, Clifford (Dorothy) Newkirk, Ralph (June & Julia) Newkirk, Helen Newkirk, Gertrude (Carl) Rosenau, Iva (John) Lawrence, and Walt (Jolene) Newkirk. One sister, Gertrude, and sisters- in- law, Julia, and Jolene, survive her.

Charlotte is survived by her two children, Kirk Ghastin of Sextonville and Kathy (John) Allbaugh of Richland Center. Her adored grandchildren include Michelle Allbaugh, Alyssa (Sam) Montiel, Ross Ghastin (Mickayla Moring), Ryan Ghastin, and Reese Ghastin. One of her greatest joys in the past few years were her great grandsons, Riley Montiel and Oliver Ghastin. Charlotte has many beloved nieces and nephews from the Newkirk, Ghastin, and Bindl families.

Always industrious, Charlotte began working to help her family at age 13. One of her jobs was as a cook for Sheriff J. Ben McClaren at the Richland County Courthouse. She cooked daily meals for the sheriff’s family as well as for the prisoners at the jail. Later, she also ran the Richland Airport Café where she began her love for flying airplanes. Charlotte became the first woman to complete a solo flight in Richland County history.

Charlotte also worked in downtown Richland Center at both Keegan’s Drugstore and Conner’s P&R store. She worked for H&R Block and did bookkeeping for the House of Richard beauty salon. Later, Charlotte bought Huffman’s Hair Design and ran the business for years before selling it upon her retirement.

Charlotte was an adventurer who loved to travel all over the world, pilot airplanes, and raise two young kids as a single mother (probably her most daring feat). She loved to work in the garden, collect buttons, and attend sporting events, plays, and choral performances for her grandchildren. Charlotte was known for baking and decorating the family birthday cakes and for creating beautiful pieces of clothing for her family members. She was active in her community as a member of various clubs and charities; her special favorites being the Christian Women’s Club and her button club. She was a long-time member of the Free Methodist Church.

Charlotte loved her Savior, Jesus, and had the peace of knowing that she would go to be with Him.

Charlotte’s family would like to thank the staff of Schmitt Woodland Hills, Agrace Hospice, and the physicians and nursing staff of the Richland Hospital for their compassionate care.
