Death23 July 2012Charles M. Mears died on 23 July 2012 at age 84 Charles M. "Charlie" Mears, age 84 died peacefully on Monday, July 23, 2012 at St. Mary's Hospital after a long battle with heart disease and kidney failure.
Charlie was born December 9, 1927, in Hillpoint, WI, the son of Thomas and Stella Mears. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Virginia "Ginny" Mears, of nearly 48 years, both parents, and his seven brothers and sisters: Irene (Haas), Anna (Slauson), Stella (Apker), Jack, Tom, Michael, and Eugene.
He leaves behind his three sons, Mark (DeDe) of Verona, WI, Todd (Angie) of Belleville, MI, and Cory (Brenda) of Oregon, WI; along with his five grandchildren: Marissa, Alena, Davis, Parker, and Cooper.
Charlie enlisted in the United States Army during World War II serving in occupied Germany. It was there that he was asked to join the army band and played trumpet, among other instruments, for the remainder of his military service.
Charlie worked as a Sheet Metal Worker for the University of Wisconsin-Madison for 39 years and repaired the roofs of every building on campus by the time of his retirement in 1990. He was also an advocate for the handicapped, volunteering his time with the Happy Hours handicap club and serving on the board of the Easter Seals of Dane County. He was very active with his church, the former St. Joseph's Catholic Church on the West Beltline Hwy, where he served on the church council, taught catechism classes, was a lector at mass, and loved participating in the choir.
His real passion, however, was his music and entertaining. He performed with the Zor Shrine Band, the VFW Band (where he was the last of the original members), and the Francis McMahan band, which entertained in nursing care facilities all over Dane County. He serenaded U.S. Presidents as well as American and foreign dignitaries. He also performed with his own musical groups under names like the Goldendaires, The Strollers, and the Charlie Mears Band. He especially enjoyed leading his most recent band, the Avenue Sizzlers, which was a fixture at the Avenue Bar for seventeen years.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to all the doctors, nurses, caregivers, and medical technicians who cared for Charlie during the past several years at St. Mary's Hospital, Dean Clinic, and in his home. We were truly blessed to have you in his life.

A visitation will precede the mass at 10:00 a.m. Family and friends may call from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 26, 2012, at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road.

Name VariationMary Agnes Mullaley was also known as Agnes Mullaley.
Married Name1 December 1945As of 1 December 1945,her married name was Drescher.
Life EventDateDescription
Birth8 December 1926Mary Agnes Mullaley was born on 8 December 1926 at Wisconsin.
She was the daughter of Arthur Thomas Mullaley and Johanna A. Mears.
Marriage1 December 1945Mary Agnes Mullaley married Leonard Paul Drescher on 1 December 1945.
Death13 March 2008Mary Agnes Mullaley died on 13 March 2008 at age 81 Mary Agnes (Mullaley) Drescher, 81, of Oakwood Villa nursing home, Altoona, entered eternal peace on Thursday, March 13, 2008.
Mary was born Dec. 8, 1926, in Hillpoint, Wis., to Arthur and Johanna Mullaley. She graduated in 1945 from Reedsburg High School, and on Dec. 1, 1945, she married Leonard P. Drescher. They lived in Baraboo, Wisconsin Dells, Madison and Milwaukee before moving to Altoona in September 1962. Mary worked since she was 16 years old, and was employed as a bookkeeper at Wissota Sand and Gravel for almost 30 years before she retired. She was a very busy woman working and raising her two children, Linda (Robert) Gabriel and Leonard A. (Charlene Swoboda) Drescher. A few years after Mary and Leonard were married, they became foster parents to two girls, Ruth and Barbara Quam. In the mid-1950s, Ruth moved back to live with them and their family until Ruth graduated from high school.
Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Wednesday March 19, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1812 Lynn Ave., Altoona. The Revs. Edmund Klimek and Norbert Wilger will officiate. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Eau Claire immediately following the service.
Friends may visit from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, at Fuller-Speckien-Hulke Funeral Home. A rosary service will begin at 7:30 p.m. to conclude the evening. Visitation will continue from 11 a.m. until the time of service Wednesday at the church.
Mary was very active in the Disabled American Veterans, as she and Leonard were life members in chapters in Madison, Milwaukee and Eau Claire, and Mary recently with Chippewa Falls. They traveled extensively for the organization, as both Leonard and Mary held most offices at local chapters and some at the state levels. They were active with the Altoona Lions Club. Mary also was a member of the Moose Club in Eau Claire for a few years. She served on Altoona's Elderly Housing Authority for many years before her stroke in August 2004.
Mary was a faithful member of St. Mary's Catholic Church since moving to Altoona in 1962, and she was very involved in the parish. She belonged to the ladies' group, was active in the parish school PTA, served on many committees for the fall festivals, and assisted her daughter, Linda, with the Youth Group from 1992 until 2004.
She was first lady of Altoona when Leonard was mayor from 1979 to 1984. She also was very supportive of his political years on Altoona's City Council. Mary said goodbye to Leonard on Feb. 5, 1985, but now is reunited with him in God's kingdom. They met at a dance hall called Dreamland and loved to dance. Mary loved music, and polkas were her favorite. Mary always put her family first and was very supportive and very proud of them. She was a "cool" grandma and never seemed to act her age. She had that twinkle in her eye and smile on her face all the time. She was one independent, sassy lady.
Red was her favorite color, and she enjoyed doing all kinds of crafts work. She always had some project going - sewing, needlework, ceramics, woodwork, beadwork or something else - and she enjoyed decorating her home for all the holidays with many of her creations. Baking also was a favorite pastime of hers, and family and friends enjoyed plenty of baked goods all year round.
Mary and Leonard loved to travel, and went south most winters. After Leonard passed, she continued to travel and visited all 50 states in the U.S., and even traveled to Norway and Sweden. She loved her winters in Arizona for many years, but her summers were spent at her favorite place, the cottage on Island Lake, from 1974 until she could no longer travel there. She greatly enjoyed watching and listening to the beautiful loons. There wasn't anything she wouldn't try to do herself, whether it was driving the pontoon, painting the cottage or rewiring a lamp. She was a hard worker all her life.
Mary was especially close to her grandchildren, and felt so blessed to live close and be able to watch them grow up. She attended many of their sporting and music events. Grandchildren are Daniel Drescher (Rachel Birch) of Altoona, Eileen (Gabriel) Van Den Heuvel (Kevin) of Barneveld, Kate (Drescher) Flores (Mario) of St. Louis, and Mary Gabriel of West St. Paul, Minn. Great-grandchildren are Eva Van Den Heuvel of Barneveld, Carter Drescher of Altoona and Baby Flores of St. Louis (expected in August 2008). Mary's two foster daughters, Ruth Livingston of Waukesha and Barbara Hochschild of Milwaukee, have stayed in touch all these years. They each had six children and many grandchildren of their own. Some considered Mary their grandmother as well.
Mary is survived by her children; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Faber of Baraboo; a niece; nephews; cousins; and many special friends. After Leonard passed away, Mary was fortunate to have the companionship of Frank Dahl (deceased), Walter Brzeski (deceased) and Norman Kuhl.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her brother, Donald; all her brothers- and sisters-in-law, Josephine Mullaley, Vincent Faber, Leon and Lorraine Chute, Bill and LaVetta Hurley, Jack and Gertrude Drescher; a niece, LaVonne Hurley; a nephew, Bill Chute; and a foster grandchild, Teri Livingston.

His parents were George and Mary (Leicht) Steckelberg, his mother passing away in the old country in 1858.
