Cooley stood out among the rough types of turn-of-the-century baseball and was dubed "Sir Richard" for his aristcratic manner. The lefthanded-hitting Texan played most in the outfield, but tried all positions except pitcher. When he retired, he had saved enough money to buy teams in Topeka and Salt Lake City, operating them profitably for many years.
Duff Gordon Cooley began his Major League baseball career on July 27, 1893, with the St. Louis Browns. The 20 year-old played for 13 seasons on 5 different teams and ended his big league playing career in 1905.
