Mr. Thompson graduated from Augusta High School in 1946. He attended Transylvania University, in Lexington, Kentucky, from 1946 through 1948, whereupon he returned home to work at the family newspaper, The Bracken Chronicle, until it closed in 1969. During his career as a newspaperman, he was employed by The Maysville Public Ledger, The Daily Independent, The Cincinnati Post, The Cincinnati Enquirer and The Dayton Daily News. He retired from the newspaper business in 1982. He was later employed at Bracken Center Nursing Home, now Bracken Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility.

He moved from Augusta and, in 1988, began a second career with the Northern Kentucky Community Action Agency. In 1989, he opened the agency's office in Grant County, where he worked until his retirement in 2007. He also served as the supervisor of the Pendleton County office for several years. While employed by this agency, he received many awards from different county and state associations. In the years that he lived in Augusta, he was very active in the Augusta Fire Department, serving as captain, lieutenant and assistant chief. During his tenure, he helped raise several thousand dollars for the department. He was also active in the Augusta school system, serving as assistant baseball coach, as well as in other capacities. He is a member of the Augusta Christian Church, where he served as a deacon during the 1950s. He is also a past master of the Augusta Free and Accepted Masons.

Mr. Thompson was united in marriage to Lorraine Holland Thompson on September 1, 1950. To this union were born four children, who survive him. They are Betsy (Keith) Miller, of Chatham, Kaye Thompson, of Powersville, James (Becky) Thompson, Jr., of Jacksonville, North Carolina, and Danny (Natasha) Thompson, of Augusta. Lorraine and a grandson, Joey Thompson, who he helped raise, predeceased him. He also leaves nine grandchildren, Jamie Archibald, Christopher Rudd, Mathew Rudd, Adrian Thompson, Ray Thompson, Celina Gantley, Alexandria Thompson, Todd Miller and Troy Miller, as well as six great-grandchildren. On May 17, 2008, he was united in marriage to Janet Hardy Thompson. She and her daughter, Missy Pope, and granddaughter, Sophie, survive.

Services are at Moore and Parker Funeral Home in Augusta on Friday, July 31. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until the time of the funeral at 7:30 p.m.
