She was the daughter of Martin Henry Wollschlager and Magdalena P. Ebel.
Marriage6 October 1940Arlene E. Wollschlager married Howard W. Grote, son of Otto H. Grote and Edna Grotelueschen, on 6 October 1940.
Death14 November 2005Arlene E. Wollschlager died on 14 November 2005 at Sauk County Health Care Center, Sauk, Wisconsin, at age 87 Arlene E. Grote, beloved mother, age 87, of Reedsburg, died on Monday, Nov. 14, 2005, at the Sauk County Health Care Center. She was born Aug. 24, 1918, in Westfield Township, Sauk County, the daughter of Martin and Lena (Ebel) Wollschlager who owned a charming farm nestled into the west end of the Baraboo Hills east of Loganville. On Oct. 6, 1940, Arlene was united in marriage to Howard W. Grote at St. John Lutheran Church in Loganville. The marriage was blessed with five children whom she raised with loving care. She was a member of St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Reedsburg throughout her adult life where she was an active member of the choir and Ladies Aid. After raising her children, Arlene worked at St. Peter's Lutheran school for nine years where students were treated to her exceptional talents as a baker and cook. Anyone who tasted her pastries - especially her applekuchen, coffeecake and fruit pies - immediately realized that in another time, another place, she might well have been the pastry chef at any of the finest restaurants in America. Family members and guests at her table also claim that her special talent with pastries in no way diminished her ability in other areas of food preparation. Most every meal was a feast of German farm-country cooking and during holidays all dined in breathless wonder. The meals were prepared from the finest ingredients Arlene could collect at local markets. A delectable cranberry sauce, mouthwatering mincemeat pies and an apple-raisin dressing were among the diner's favorite made-from-scratch menu items. While typically humble about her culinary skills, Arlene was particularly proud of her apple-raisin dressing and from time to time noted that while, "Most anyone could make a decent sage dressing, she refused to torture her family and guests with a dressing so common and lacking in palate-pleasing sensations." Her grandchildren call it a dressing "to die for." While living away from home at colleges, overseas in the military, or for work-related reasons, her children were charmed by Arlene's skill as a writer. Written in a flowing hand learned at St. John's Lutheran School in Loganville, her letters were invariably witty, winsome, descriptive and inspirational to their recipient. After Howard's retirement as a contractor, the couple traveled widely, enjoying America's scenic wonders, and visits with family and friends. Nevertheless, Arlene was always happy to return to Reedsburg and the countryside in which she was raised - a land she thought of as "blessed by God and one of His most beautiful creations." Arlene is survived by her children, Russell (Marla Brenner) Grote of Madison, Richard (Sandra) Grote of Baraboo, Mark (Anita) Grote of Marshall, Ann (Lee) Virnig of Oregon, and Kurt (Fern Hirsch) Grote of Fitchburg; grandchildren, Jessica, Adele, Jennifer, Chad, Jonathon, Stacie, Andy, Rachel, Leah, Emily, Samantha, Aliyah and Kiva; sister-in-law, Alibeth Wollschlager of Arlington; several nieces and nephews; along with other relatives and friends. Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard; sister, Loretta Schultz; and brother, Arnold Wollschlager. Funeral services for Arlene E. Grote will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2005, at ST. PETER'S EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH in Reedsburg with Pastor Kevin J. Kohnke officiating. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery. Friends may call on Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2005, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the FARBER FUNERAL HOME and on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.
