He was the son of John Paul Schiel and Virginia McPoland.
Death2 May 2017William P. Schiel died on 2 May 2017 at Dubuque, Dubuque, Iowa, at age 57 William P. “Billy” Schiel, age 57, of Dubuque, was called home peacefully at 5:10 a.m., on Tuesday, May 2, 2017, at home, surrounded by his loving family. To honor Billy’s life, funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Friday, May 5, 2017, at St. Patrick’s Church, 1425 Iowa Street, with Msgr. Thomas E. Toale officiating. To celebrate Billy’s life, family and friends may visit from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., on Thursday, May 4, 2017, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, where a parish scripture wake service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Billy was born on June 27, 1959, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of John “Honus” and Margaret “Ginny” (McPoland) Schiel.

Billy was a proud graduate of Wahlert High School, Class of 1977. He was a lifelong resident of Dubuque who eagerly invested his work life with FDL, Chi-Chi’s, and finally with the Mystique Casino since its beginning over 21 years ago. He was known as the “friendly bartender” who may not have always known your name, but definitely remembered your favorite drink. Billy was a loyal family man who thoroughly enjoyed every opportunity to bond with his family. Billy faithfully managed the family’s vacation fund and looked forward to their regular excursions together where the worries of work could be left behind and the joys of family could be embraced. Billy was also a fun loving man who happily anticipated his well earned trips with friends to both Las Vegas and Mexico. In his free time, Billy was always up for a friendly hand of cards, or generously helping out anyone who needed a hand. Billy was well known, within his inner circles, for his tenacious ability at practicing the art of “patience” on the golf course and also on repair projects around the house. Sadly, our time here on earth with Billy has been far too short, and our hearts ache with the pain of loss which only faith and time can heal. But we thankfully find subtle amounts of peace and comfort in trusting that Billy is once again reunited with his Dad and that they’ll both be in good company until we see them again.

Those left to cherish Bill’s memory include

his adoring mother,
Margaret “Ginny” Schiel, Dubuque, IA;

his 6 siblings,
Bruce Schiel, Fort Myers, FL,
Robert “Bo” (Ronda) Schiel, Dubuque, IA,
Paul (Ana) Schiel, Winston-Salem, NC,
Diane (Richard “Byrd”) Hoffman, Dubuque, IA,
Janet (Ronald “Woody”) Stumpf, Dubuque, IA
and Nancy (Dan) Biechler, Marion, Iowa;

14 nieces and nephews;

and 18 great-nieces and great-nephews.

Billy was preceded in death by his father, John Schiel; and a brother-in-law, Stephen Stumpf.

A William P. “Billy” Schiel memorial fund has been established, which will be distributed among his favorite charities.

The family would like to thank Dr. Kenneth Steffen, Dr. Eric Engelman, and Hospice of Dubuque for their kind and compassionate care of Bill and his family.
