He was united in marriage to Bernadine (Bernie) Hetzel on June 17, 1961 at St. Luke's Catholic Church, Plain.
After graduating from high school Vern worked for the Suemnicht Cheese Company, Loganville before entering the U.S. Army for active duty from 1957 to 1959. He was stationed at Fort Bliss, TX. He then served four years in the Army Reserve and received an honorable discharge in 1963.
After returning from active duty, Vern returned to work for Suemnicht Cheese Co. In 1963 he began farming with his brother, Florian (Duffy) Liegel, in Spring Green. In 1991 the farming partnership dissolved and he worked for the USPS as a rural carrier until his retirement in 2008. He then mowed for the Village of Spring Green and took pride in a well-kept lawn and landscape that always looked its best. He loved fishing, hunting and the family vacations to the North Woods. His prized possessions were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved spending time with them and especially playing Euchre with his grandkids because they were always "out to beat him".
Vern was an active member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church where he served on the parish council at the time the new church was built. He was a 50 year plus member of the Spring Green Knights of Columbus and a past Grand Knight. He was a past president of the Spring Green Lions Club and served on the Spring Green Village Board for eleven years.

Vern is survived by his wife, Bernie; his five children: Diane (Kevin) Kraemer of Plain, Tim (Sally) Liegel, Lori (Roger) Hoffman, Jane (Eric) Briehl of Spring Green, and Nick Liegel of Mount Horeb, ten grandchildren: Andy (Michelle), Brad (Steph) and Carly Kraemer, McKenzie and Payton (Mikkayla) Liegel, Carter (Kiara) Hoffman, Kylie Schwingle (Hunter) and Ali Hoffman, Taylor and Emily Briehl and five great-grandchild, Nora and Samuel Kraemer, Everly and Penelope Liegel, and Aidan Kraemer. He is further survived by sisters-in-law: Marcie Liegel, Jeanette (Richard) Limmex, Julie Hetzel (Lois Baseler), Jackie Hetzel, and Rhonna Hetzel. Brothers-in-law: Dan (Darcy) Hetzel, Am Hetzel and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Vern was preceded in death by: his parents, brothers: Ed (Alma), Alfred (Bernice), Vic, Florian (Dolores), George and infant brothers Joseph and Ralph Liegel; sisters: Florence (Allie) Alt, Alma (Ray) Brickl, Marian (Al) Layton, Vi (Ed) Paulus and his brother-in-law Larry Hetzel and father and mother-in-law, John and Mary (Brickl) Hetzel.

Vern will be remembered as a good friend, and loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and husband. Vern had an amazing life that was filled with fun, laughter and many good times with his family and friends.

Larry is survived by his siblings, Dolores Liegel, Jeanette (Richard) Limmex, Bernie (Vernon) Liegel, Dan (Darcy) Hetzel, Ambrose Hetzel, and Julie Hetzel (Lois Baseler); sister-in-law, Jackie Hetzel; his mother-in-law, Sally Ruhland; his brother and sisters-in-law, Steve Ruhland (Holly Breitkreutz), Diane (Greg) Brent, Duane (Julie) Ruhland, Sandy (Dave) Ruhland, Laurie (Bob) Haas, Cheri (Bill) Carpenter; many nieces, nephews, and friends. Larry most enjoyed his time spent fishing with several close friends and doting over his honorary children, KayDee (Kallan) Maxwell, Jessica Schmitt, and Kyle (Riley) Schmitt. He especially enjoyed spending his days with honorary grandchildren Andrew and Tyler Maxwell.

Larry was preceded in death by parents, John and Mary Hetzel; brother-in-law, Florian Liegel; and father-in-law, Charlie Ruhland.

A mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, September 18th, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Plain. Fr. Garrett Kau will officiate burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday, September 17th, 2021 at St. Luke’s Catholic Church from 4:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. and on Saturday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of Mass.

He preceded her in death on May 30, 2005. Romelda was employed by the Sauk Prairie School District as a cook for many years. She enjoyed spending time watching birds and deer and most of all enjoyed time with family and friends. Survivors include three children, Vickie (Dave) Yanke of Leland, Jackie (Ambrose) Hetzel of Plain and Randy (Josie) Redfield of Middleton; seven grandchildren, Dawn (Bob) Jewell of Plain, John Hetzel of Plain, Alex Hetzel of Ridgeway, Dena (Ben) Turner of Prairie du Sac, Kelly (Josh Needham) Yanke of Plain, and Crystal and Dana Redfield of Middleton; four great-grandchildren, William and Elizabeth Jewell, Brandt Turner and Marissa Needham; a brother, Vilas (Diane) Richards of Sauk City; and two sisters, Fauhn Dickens of Madison and Juanita (Vern) Kuehn of Madison. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother, Robert; and a grandson, Craig Yanke. A funeral service will be held at HOOVERSON FUNERAL HOME in Sauk City at noon on Monday, March 26, 2007. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of service Monday. He was born Dec. 8, 1936 to the late Ralph and Adeline (Jenewein) Richards. He grew up in Blackhawk, where he attended through the eighth grade and stayed to work on the farm allowing his sisters to go on to school. Vilas later enlisted in the U.S. Army serving as a Marksman earning his Expert Rifle; he was fortunate to also attend his Badger Honor Flight in April 2017.

Vilas was united in marriage to Diane Kout on Apr. 14, 1959; she preceded him in death on Sept. 19, 2012. Together they raised their 4 children near Sauk City and spending their time in Blackhawk on the Four “R’s ranch, where they had their own zoo of animals. They raised steers, feed chicks and peacocks and loved their beagles. Vilas started work as auto mechanic in Sauk City at the Consumers Coop and later purchased and ran the dog food factory west of Sauk City to be closer to home. He then went on to start Richards Sanitation and Septic Service, he served customers for over 30 years before he went on to work at McFarlanes for a few years before easing into retirement.

Vilas loved the outdoors, turkey and whitetail hunting; and trap shoots on Sundays. He was an avid shooter, served on some of the local club’s board of directors and often shooting at all the local club events including the Badger State Games; and most recently earned an Honorary Lifetime Member of the Wisconsin River Sportsman Club, something he was very proud of. He and Diane enjoyed their time spent traveling, their family events and long weekends at their spot on Castle Rock Lake at Dellwood. After Diane passed, Vilas was fortunate enough to spend his time with his friend, Gracie Roemer. They enjoyed UTV-ing the backroads and trails. Daily drives looking for the white deer and trips to Florida in the winter until she passed in 2022.

Vilas is survived by his children, Rick (Sandy) Richards, Randy (Kim) Richards, and daughters; Renee (Ron) Eichmann and Rhonda (Mark) Pierick; 5 grandchildren, Danielle (Josh) Wilhelm, Corey (Kaydee) Eichmann, Joseph Eichmann, Kyle (Geena) Carlson, Krystal (Tyler) Martin; 6 great grandchildren, Dominick, Parker, Aria, Kole, Caroline, and Lewis. He is further survived by a special nephew, Randy Redfield; nieces, Vicki Yanke and Jackie Hetzel; and many other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents and wife, Diane; Vilas was preceded in death by an infant son; grandson, Ronald Eichmann; siblings, Fauhn (Vern “Uncle Bum”) Dickens, Romelda (Cam) Redfield, Juanita (Vern) Dorr- Kuehn and special friend, Gracie Roemer.
