  • A bit of history concerning the Willow Valley cemetery would not be complete without mention of the Rev. Simon Spyker and his wife, Rosanna, both lived to a ripe old age. Rev. Spyker was 86 years of age at the time of his passing and his wife was 71. Rev. Spyker organized a Lutheran church in 1862. It had 14 members as follows: Samuel Davis and wife; S. C. Davis and wife; Samuel Stofer and wife; J. G. Marden and wife; Harriet Cass; Rosanna Spyker and O. V. Davis. In 1869 it became a Congregational church and met for worship in the school house; later building a church of their own.2

Death14 July 1918James Harvey Cooley died on 14 July 1918 at Silver City, Grant, New Mexico, at age 69 In death of Harvey Cooley at age 69 years, at his home in Silver City, Monday, July 14, 1918. He came to the Southwest in the 1870's, accompanying U.S. Cavalry as a wagon boss when it was ridding this country of the Indians who were on the warpath almost continually.
He had lived in Grant County, near 35 years, and during that time, had been a stage driver, Indian fighter, cattleman and farmer. He had a ranch on Bear Creek, and divided his time between it and his home in Silver City for many years.
Possessed of a rugged constitution, Mr. Cooley was active despite his advancing years. It was not until a few months ago that he began to fail in health. He was up and about even to the day he died. He is survived by a widow and three children, Mrs. Annie Bibb, of Santa Rita, Mrs. Walter Jones, of Reserve, and Harvey Cooley, Jr. of St. Joseph, Mo.
Funeral was held Tuesday from the O.C. Hinman Funeral Parlors. He was buried in Silver City cemetery.
