Mr. Smith died Friday at Mitchell Park Convalescent Center, East Moline. He was the former owner and operator of the Brown Owl Tavern, East Moline, retiring in 1979 because of poor health. He married Minnie Gosa in 1963 in Mount Carroll, Ill. He served in the Army during World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of Alpha Ma-sonic Lodge 155, Galesburg, Ill; Moline Consistory and co-ordinate bodies, East Moline Moose, East Moline American Legion Post 227, Veterans of Foreign Wars, East Moline; 40 and 8 and Silvis Eagle Lodge 1839 and the Mohammed Shrine Temple, Peoria, Ill. He was a Chicago Cubs fan. A memorial fund has been es-tablished. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Linda (Mrs. Dennis) Tiechman, Green Rock, Ill., Stacy (Mrs. Jody) Kennedy, East Moline, and Chris (Mrs. Jim) Carver, Woodstock, Ga; eight grandchildren; sisters, Marjorie Kasparie, Woodhull, Ill., Maxine Simpson, Bushnell, Ill., and Barbara Fox, Galesburg; and brothers, Max, Barstow, Calif., Glenn, Bloomington, Calif., and Don and Earl, both of Galesburg.

Smith; two sisters, Marjorie Kasparie of Woodhull and Maxine (Frank) Simpson of Bushnell; as well as many nieces and nephews. Also surviving is a special friend and companion, Donna Scott.
He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1956. He was a member of Operating Engineers Local 649. In addition, he worked for John Deere and various local manufacturing companies. He was a past member of Masonic Lodge, Post 155, Galesburg. His self-appointed priority was his family and friends. Don was the ultimate brother, father, grandfather and friend. He was always ready to lend a helping hand and always ready for a celebration.
He was preceded in death by his parents; seven brothers, Earl, Clyde, Harold, Glen, Lyle, Dean and Max; and two sisters, Marie Despain and Barbara Fox.
Graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 17, 2010, in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens Chapel, with the Rev. Milton H. Marquith officiating. Fellowship and celebration of life will take place after the service at Galesburg American Legion Post 285.
Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

He received the Victory Medal; European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon With One Bronze Battle Star; Two Overseas Service Bars; Army of Occupation Medal-Germany and the Good Conduct Medal. He worked with timber for Milo Richmond and on a farm for Barney Ott.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, January 19, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. at the Hurd Hendricks Funeral Home and Crematory in Knoxville, Illinois. Rev. Milton Marquith officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 18, 2009 from 2:00 until 4:00 P.M. at the Funeral Home in Knoxville, Illinois. Burial in Trenton Cemetery in rural Dahinda, Illinois. Left to cherish his memory are his children: Connie Godfrey of Galesburg, and Russell Kelso of Galesburg; six grandchildren; many great grandchildren; and many great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Henry “Hank” (Phyllis) Kelso of East Galesburg, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Sereta Jefferson; and three brothers, Lester, Glen and Frances.

Bert was employed by Gates Rubber Company in Galesburg for thirty years, retiring in 2005 as a Pressman. He enjoyed attending yard sales, antiquing, and was a collector of everything.

Cremation rites will be accorded. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorial Contributions may be made to the family in care of Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Homes, 120 South Public Square, Knoxville, Illinois 61448. Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home & Crematory in Knoxville, Illinois is assisting the family with their wishes.

Surviving is his mother Naomi Jones of Dahinda, Ill., two daughters, Mary Jo Brooks and Lynn (and Jeremy) Price both of Galesburg, a son John Kelso, three brothers, Hank Kelso of East Galesburg, Francis Kelso of Dahinda, Ill. and B.W. Kelso of Galesburg and eight grandchildren, Jacob Cochran, Megan Cochran, Courtney Cochran, Stevie Heiman, Christopher Brooks, Zoe Brooks, Mason Price and Evan Kelso.
He was preceded in death by his father, a son Michael Kelso, two daughters, Lisa Kelso and Angie Kelso, a brother Glenn Kelso, an Uncle Claude Kelso and three grandchildren, Aydan Brooks, Ariel Brooks and Ethan Price.
Lester worked for Outboard Marine Corporation, Gale Products Division and Maytag both in Galesburg. He also was a farmer of fresh vegetables and worked for several area farmers. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Graveside service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 26, 2012 at Knoxville Cemetery, Knoxville, Ill. Rev. Kirk Kendall will officiate. Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel.

Surviving are sons, William (Nancy) Kelso, Knoxville and Robert Kelso, Panama City Beach, Fla; grandsons, Ryan and Nathan Gibbs; granddaughter: Samantha LaPorte; mother, Naomi Jones, Gilson; and brothers: Henry "Hank" (Phyllis) Kelso, East Galesburg, Bert (Brenda) Kelso, Galesburg, Lester (Mayeit) Kelso, Galesburg and Francis (Marilyn) Kelso, Gilson. He was preceded in death by his father, Wilbur Kelso; and stepfather, Charles F. Jones. He was raised and educated in Dahinda. He worked as a fork lift operator for Koppers in Galesburg. He attended East Galesburg Community Chapel in East Galesburg. Fishing in Spoon River, hunting and trapping were his favorite pastimes.
We love him and will miss him for the rest of our lives. Cremation rites will be accorded.
A memoral service will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, at Hurd-Hendricks Fellowship Center, 126 S. Public Square, Knoxville. Inurnment will be at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the family. Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

His brothers, Henry “Hank” (Phyllis) Kelso of East Galesburg, Illinois and Bert Kelso of Galesburg, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Lester and Glen and a sister-in-law, Brenda.

He worked doing many odd jobs in the area.

Graveside Services will be at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, March 30, 2018 at the Trenton Cemetery in Rural Dahinda, Illinois, with Bobbie Jo Barnes officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Family. Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Homes and Crematory in charge of services.
