Jan E. Kraemer

Father*Leo Kraemer b. 1905, d. 2002
Mother*Lucy Rosan Bauer b. 4 Nov 1904, d. 7 Oct 2000
Life EventDateDescription
Birth11 July 1938Jan E. Kraemer was born on 11 July 1938 at Wisconsin.
He was the son of Leo Kraemer and Lucy Rosan Bauer.
Death9 September 2024Jan E. Kraemer died on 9 September 2024 at age 86 Jan E. Kraemer, age 86, of Plain, Wisconsin, passed away on Monday, September 9, 2024, while doing what he loved best—taking care of his home and yard, the place where he lived, loved, and raised his family.

Born on July 11, 1938, in Plain, WI, Jan was the son of Leo and Lucy (Bauer) Kraemer. Jan graduated from St. Luke High School in 1957 and proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1957 to 1960, stationed at Twentynine Palms, CA. During his service, he met Colleen Riffel on a train journey from Chicago to Los Angeles. Their connection was immediate and strong, and Jan’s romantic gesture of proposing via a mailed engagement ring led to their marriage on February 23, 1963, in Anaheim, CA.

Upon returning to Plain, Jan worked for Edward Kraemer & Sons, where he operated a power shovel. Several years later, he joined Kinsman Plumbing, Electric & Refrigeration. Following Phil Kinsman’s retirement in 1972, Jan founded Kraemer Electric, a business he ran with dedication until his retirement in 2005. He took great pleasure in working alongside his son, Tony, in his later years.

Jan was an avid fisherman, making 38 trips to northern Ontario, Canada in pursuit of the perfect catch. One son swears it was 40 trips, or maybe even 40 years—we've all lost track at this point!

His love of the outdoors extended to taking walks through the marsh with his dogs, tending to his amazing iris garden, and enjoying scenic drives while proudly pointing out places where he had worked and played. Jan delighted in playing hide-and-seek with his grandkids, taking them to “Acornland,” and leaving “butt prints” on their pillows. He had a knack for sneaking Kwik Trip cookies, devouring large-print books, tackling online puzzles, and (sorry mom) sneaking a bit of brandy.

Jan is survived by his wife of 61 years, Colleen Kraemer; children Pete (DiAnn) of Mazomanie, Joan (John) Statz of Mazomanie, Dawn (Scott) Evert of Mazomanie, Erin (Jim) Mueller of Ripon, Tony of Madison, Josh (Joy) of Brodhead, and Matt (Gwen) of Chicago. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren: Chris Jackson, Cody Brei, Caitlyn Steen, and Jake Steen; Jack, Jill, and Noah Statz; Hannah, Belle, Lane, and Nate Evert; Rosalie, Cedric, and Gemma Kraemer; 2 great-grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; and 4 step-great-grandchildren. He is additionally survived by his siblings Kenneth (Norine) Kraemer of Plain/Ladera Ranch, CA, Ron (Margo Reeves) Kraemer, Carlsbad, CA, Phyllis Avenson, Cohasset, MN, and Doris Bindl of Plain.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Jill; his parents, Leo and Lucy Kraemer; his sister, Virginia Fleming; his brothers-in-law, Ray Fleming, Vernon Bindl, and Jim Avenson; and his father- and mother-in-law, Joe and Ruth Riffel.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at St. Luke’s Catholic Church, with burial to follow in the church cemetery where military graveside rites will be conducted by Plain American Legion Post #398. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:00 A.M. until the time of the Mass.
