Death1985Anna Elizabeth Werdel died in 1985 Mrs. Anna E. Brown, 88, of Cherokee, died Saturday at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee following a lengthy illness. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee. The Rev. Richard Ries will officiate and burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. The rosary will be recited today at 7 p.m. by the parish and at 7:30 p.m. by Catholic Daughters of America at Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee. Mrs. Brown, the former Anna E. Werdel, was born Feb. 19, 1897, in Cherokee County. She married Omer J. Niblick. He died in 1943. She married Harry Brown in 1947 in Cherokee. He died in 1971. She lived in Des Moines for 30 years before returning to Cherokee in 1971. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and Catholic Daughters of America. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. James (Dolores) Montgomery of Spirit Lake, four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Paul Kohns, the son of Peter P. and Elizabeth (Heller) Kohns, was born Nov. 4, 1910, in rural Cherokee. His childhood years were spent in Cherokee, where he received his education.

On July 8, 1933, Paul was united in marriage to Austrid Carlson at Maryhill Catholic Church. Following their marriage they farmed in Cherokee County for many years.

Paul was a board member of the REC, a representative of Grinnell Mutual Insurance, president of Cherokee Farm Bureau, president of the Cherokee County Fair Board, and a member of the Knights of Columbus. Paul also worked as a salesperson at the Gildner-Sauer Clothing store in Cherokee.
Paul's family felt that he was the best popcorn maker, tractor and car driving teacher, and fishing mentor which he greatly enjoyed doing for his grandchildren.

He is survived by his three children, Donald Kohns and his wife, Jeanette of East Grand Forks, Minn., Elaine Johnstone of Glendale, Ariz., and Larry Kohns of Olathe, Kan; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; as well as other relatives and many friends.

Paul was preceded in death by his wife, Austrid Carlson on Dec. 8, 1992; two sisters, Josephine Smith and Marie Eischen; and one brother, Lawrence Kohns.

Funeral services for Edward F. Kelliher, 33 years old, Swanson apartments, who died Friday in a Sioux City hospital following an operation for appendicitis, will be held at 9 o'clock Monday morning in the Cathedral of the Epiphany.

Rev. Joseph Fitzpatrick, assistant Tutor of the cathedral, will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery.

The body was taken to the home of Mr. Kelliher's parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Kelliher, 500 Fairmount street, Saturday afternoon by Larkin's funeral home, and will remain at the residence until time for the funeral.

Mr. Kelliher came to Sioux City with his parents from Gladstone, Mich., his birthplace, when he was a year old. He was a traveling representative of the Huntington laboratories, Huntington. Ind., a member of the cathedral choir and active in the Little Theater guild. He had been football coach and a sport referee at Cherokee for a short time.

Survivors include his widow, his parents, a sister and two brothers.

James Kelliher, 89, a resident of Sioux City for 61 years and a former bailiff of the municipal court, formerly of 500 S. Fairmount street, died Sunday at a hospital after a long illness. Mr. Kelliher was born June 6, 1871 at Fenton, Mich. He married Elizabeth B. LaBeau on January 7, 1897 at Negaunee, Mich. They moved to Sioux City in June, 1899. Mrs. Kelliher who served on the board of directors of the public library here for 30 years and taught many years in public and parochial schools, died in May, 1956. Mr. Kelhher worked as conductor and railway clerk for the Milwaukee and Omaha railroads from 1888 to 1938 when he retired. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Train men for 60 years and was a past president of the Trades and Labor assembly, A. F. L, and the Brotherhood of Railroad Clerks, He was a member of the Woodbury county war price and rationing board and member of the O. P. A. tire board and manpower commission during world war 2. Mr. Kelliher retired as an employe of the city assessor's office in 1949. He also was a longtime member of the industrial development council. In 1952 Mr. Kelliher was appointed to a five-year term as a member of the board of municipal auditorium trustees. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Eileen Kerns of Davenport, Ia;two sons, Emmet of Covina, Cal., and Charles of Niles, Ill; five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. The body was taken to the Manning - O'Toole funeral home.
