Death4 September 2018Gerald Charles Garverick died on 4 September 2018 at age 81 Gerald "Gus" C. Garverick age 81, resident of Shelby died Monday, September 3, 2018 after a brief illness at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.

Born January 11, 1937 in Cleveland, OH to Beryl and Ruth (Perkins) Garverick, he had been a Shelby resident since 1958. Gus was a graduate of Fredericktown High School and had served in the United States Navy Reserve. He began his career as a tool and die apprentice with General Motors in Ontario and retired as general supervisor after 40 years of service.

While serving with the U.S. Naval Reserve, Gus began his passion for flying and later attained his private pilot’s license. Gus impacted many young men’s lives as he thoroughly enjoyed the 12 years he spent as a Boy Scout leader for troop # 403. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Shelby, The Guy's Club and The Wooden Boat Club in Lakeside, OH. He was a Junior Achievement sponsor. He served on the City of Shelby Building and Grounds Commission for many years.

In his retired years, he enjoyed woodworking where he made each of his grandkids cradles. Riding with his friends in the “Mild Hogs” motorcycle club provided many laughs. He also volunteered with the Shelby Helpline Ministries. Next to watching his grandkids events he was an avid Whippet, Buckeye and Indians fan. Above all Gus loved his family and cherished the time he spent with them.

Gus is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Joan (Wilson) Garverick; children Joy (Alan) Ross of Shelby, Scott (Heidi) Garverick of Westerville, OH; four grandchildren Kevin Ross (Tara) (one great granddaughter, Noli), Laura Ross (Brian), Cale (Krista) Garverick and Sydney Garverick; nieces, nephews and other relatives.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Beverly Compton and infant son Kip.

Friends may call at the Barkdull Funeral Home & Crematory in Shelby, Friday September 7, 2018 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM. A funeral service will be held Saturday 11:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church. Reverend JR Harvey will officiate with interment held in Oakland Cemetery.

Death3 September 2017Beverly Jean Garverick died on 3 September 2017 at age 83 Beverly Jean Compton, of Centerburg, Ohio, died late Sunday morning, September 3, 2017 at St. Ann’s Hospital in Westerville, from complications due to a fall in her home a few days previously. She passed away peacefully, in the presence of loved ones. She was 83.

She was born in Cleveland in 1934; in childhood, her family moved to Fredericktown, Ohio, where she graduated from Fredericktown High School in 1952.

Soon thereafter she met and fell in love with Ralph Compton, fresh out of the U.S. Air Force and the youngest in a family of twelve children from Centerburg. Ralph and Bevie were married on November 10, 1955 in Fredericktown Methodist Church; Ralph began farming (at first full-time, later while also working at Nestle’s in Sunbury) and the young couple began raising a family, Bev giving birth to a daughter (1956), a son (1959), and another daughter (1961).

While raising the kids, restoring a historic Pony Express stop on Old Route 3 (featured in the Columbus Dispatch, and the family home to this day), and staying busy as a farm wife, Bev also worked full time: Bailey’s Veterinary Supply, Centerburg (4 years) and First Knox National Bank, Centerburg (15+ years). All this time, she had a dream: to open a business of her own that specialized in country-themed gifts and collectibles, and in 1988 Bev opened The Country Window, on Barnes Road in Centerburg. The business thrived, especially during Bev’s annual holiday open houses each fall, where customers from around Ohio, the Midwest and the United States returned yearly, signing their names to The Country Window’s guest book and catching up over hours of small talk with Bev.

Indeed, Beverly Compton loved to visit. She was fascinated by the pageant of life and its participants. She loved books and reading. She loved art and beautiful things. She loved creating. She loved Facebook, sometimes a little too much. She loved Ohio State sports. She loved the company of her friends and the hours of chat they effortlessly dispatched. She loved Kristi’s Bakery in Centerburg. More than anything, she loved her family. She loved them as much as she possibly could, every day of her life.

Bev is preceded in passing by her parents, Ruth and Beryl Garverick, and her husband, Ralph (1994). And by Lucky the cocker spaniel (1997), her best friend after Ralph died.

Beverly is survived by her children, grandchildren, great grandchild, her brother, and by all of her friends, too many, alas, to mention here. It’s hard to emphasize strongly enough just how much you enriched Bevie’s days.

He was many things throughout his life. First and foremost, Marvin was a devout Christian and man of faith. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Loganville. He enjoyed attending church, listening to VCY radio, and sharing the word of the Lord.

Marvin attended Friendship School in rural Loganville, then Reedsburg High School where he met his future bride. After graduating High School in 1949 he attended the UW Ag Short Course in Madison.

In November 1951, Marvin was drafted by the U.S. army and served in communications overseas for two years during the Korean War. He was a member of Hillpoint VFW Post 3434. In 2017, he participated in a Badger Honor Flight to visit Washington DC.

Marvin married Ruth Astle on June 5, 1954 at his church in Loganville. Together, they had seven children.

Most of Marvin’s career was spent farming. That job brought out his natural ingenuity for engineering, building, planning, and making things work. Those traits put him ahead of his time, incorporating practices like no-till planting, solar energy, organic farming and regenerative agriculture. He ran the farming operation on Grote Hill Road 40+ years. After stepping back from the farm, he worked in construction for and with Rick Bock turning old farm building into something new, and was a driver for the local Amish community.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Alma (Meyer) Kruse; father-in-law, George Astle, mother-in-law, Marian (Reeve) Patterson, an infant daughter, Nancy Kruse; sons-in-law, Gary Corton and David Sharp; and infant great-granddaughter, Aria Corton.

Marvin is survived by his wife, Ruth and children Mary Corton, Ron (Jeanette) Kruse, Ken (JoAnne) Kruse, Allen Kruse (Linda Gutzmann-Schlieckau), Duane Kruse (Cathy Tholen), and Betty Sharp. He is survived by grandchildren: Lance (Valerie) Corton, Eric (Nicky) Corton, Amanda (Franco) Okello, Luke (Meagan) Corton, Victoria (Devon) Corton, Jessica (Stephen) Shen, Ryan (Jacky) Kruse, Mallory Kruse (Coty Chase), Jillian (JR) Rupinski, Marsha Kruse, Paul (Elyse) Kruse, Matthew Kruse, Anthony John Samsel, Justin (Theresa) Holman and family, Jerry Holman and family, Jacob (Jody) Holman and family, Summer Schlieckau, Jolene (Derek) Westholm. He is survived by great-grandchildren: Makayla (Daniel), Dominic (Lilyanna), Kiana, Kalena, Jasmine, Rylie, Izzy, Bella, Oscar, Margaret, Olivia, Aubrey, Hallyn, Crew, Vivian, Lorelei, Ellery, Gracie, Jaelynn, Sophia, Miles, Audri, Tess, Daisy, Lily, Ella, Lawrence, Sayje (Tony), Jozef (Hannah), Aurora, Toby, Andy, Cecilia, Ciltali (Lali), LiliBeth, Ava, Novalynn, Eleanore, and Rowan. He is survived by great-great-grandchildren: Lex, Lilly, Kaylee, Mariana, and Emilio. Marvin is also survived by his brother, Lavern Kruse.

Visitation for Marvin will be held Friday, June 26, 2026 from 4-7 p.m. at Farber Funeral Home in Reedsburg. On Saturday, June 27, there will be a visitation from 10-11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Loganville with a funeral service at 11 a.m. followed by committal in the church cemetery.
