He was the son of Henry Adolph Montag and Luna Sloan.
Marriage27 August 1946Philip John Montag married Oma Marie Allen on 27 August 1946.
Death2 October 2011Philip John Montag died on 2 October 2011 at age 89 Philip John (Bill) Montag, age 89, of Faribault, MN, and formerly of Curlew and Dows, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, October 2, 2011, peacefully at his home following a brief illness, cared for by his wife and family. The family will celebrate Bill’s life with a visitation and funeral Mass. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, October 6, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Divine Mercy Catholic Church (139 Mercy Dr.) in Faribault. Visitation will be held from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. at the church on Thursday. Interment with military honors will be held on Friday, October 7, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Mallard, Iowa. Philip John (Bill) Montag was born on October 11, 1921 in West Bend, Iowa, a middle son among the seventeen children of Henry and Luna (Sloan) Montag. He married Oma Marie Allen in West Bend on August 27, 1946 and fathered four sons and five daughters, all of whom loved him very much. He was preceded in death by his parents, by his son, Randy, and by several of his brothers and sisters, all of whom have been waiting to welcome him to the next life. He is survived by his wife, Oma; sons, Tom (Mary) of Fairwater, WI, Philip Jr. (Vicky) of Dows, IA, and Henry (Susan) of Manchester, IA; daughters, Kathleen Keilen (Jim) of Faribault, MN, Nancy Gehrke (Jerry) of Mankato, MN, Marilyn Quist (Bill) of Kanawha, IA, Diane Montag of Farmington, MN, and Colleen Vandervort (Dean) of Alden, IA; 28 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; several brothers and sisters; and by many friends and neighbors at Curlew and Dows, Iowa. Bill reached the rank of First Sergeant in the United States Army’s Third Division in the European Theater during World War II, an experience he very seldom spoke about. After his discharge from the service and his marriage, he and Oma took up farming at Rodman, Iowa, then at Curlew for many years before buying a farm of their own at Dows. Many of those early years at Curlew are recounted in Curlew: Home, a memoir by his son, Tom. Eventually retiring from farming, Bill and Oma worked for several years as USDA meat inspectors, living in Mason City and Indianola, Iowa, and then retiring to Hampton, Iowa. In 2004, the couple moved to Faribault, MN, to be close to three daughters who could help care for them in their final years. Bill was a quiet man, never saying much, but he didn’t suffer fools gladly. One day a tax assessor, snooping about the place and trying to make small talk, said, “Do you think it will rain?” “It’ll be a hell of a long dry spell if it don’t”, Bill said. It wasn’t until his hospitalization that his sons and daughters got to see him display his very dry but exquisite sense of humor. If he hadn’t been a farmer, he could have been a good stand-up comedian.

All of the family was honored to care for their husband and father during his final illness, one last opportunity to show him how much they loved him. His legacy to his children, after 65 years of marriage, is that he loved their mother long and steady. Oma says that if she could tell her story, it would be a love story. The family is grateful to all the Mayo nurses at St. Mary’s in Rochester and Cannon Falls Hospital, and to the Rice County Home Health staff and the Faribault Area Hospice for their good care during Bill’s last illness. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation of food be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry in Faribault or memorial to the Faribault Area Hospice in memory of Bill. Funeral arrangements are being completed with the Parker Kohl Funeral Home & Crematory of Faribault, MN.

Oma Marie (Allen) Montag was born on January 20, 1928 in West Bend, Iowa, the youngest daughter among the thirteen children of A.C. and Ida (Phillips) Allen. She married Philip John Montag in West Bend on August 27, 1946 and raised four sons and five daughters, all of whom loved her very much. She was preceded in death by her parents; by her husband, Philip; by her son, Randy, a terrible loss for her; and by several brothers and sisters. She is survived by her sons, Tom (Mary) of Fairwater, WI, Philip Jr. (Vicky) of Dows, IA, and Henry (Susan) of Cedar Rapids, IA; daughters, Kathleen Keilen (Jim) of Faribault, MN, Nancy Gehrke (Jerry) of Mankato, MN, Marilyn Quist (Bill) of Kanawha, IA, Diane Montag of Farmington, MN, and Colleen Vandervort (Dean) of Alden, IA; 28 grandchildren; more than 30 great grandchildren; her sister, Florence (Sunny) Hatfield; and by many friends and neighbors at Curlew and Dows, Iowa.

After their marriage, Oma and Philip took up farming in Rodman, Iowa, then at Curlew for many years before buying a farm of their own at Dows. Many of those early years at Curlew are recounted in Curlew: Home, a memoir by her son, Tom. Many readers have said that Oma was the hero of that book, and she was.

Eventually retiring from farming, both Oma and Philip worked for several years as USDA meat inspectors, living in Mason City and Indianola, Iowa, and then retiring to Hampton, Iowa. In 2004, the couple moved to Faribault, MN, to be close to three daughters who could help care for them in their final years.

Her "most perfect day ever" was a day in early spring in the first years of their marriage when, while driving home after purchasing a used oat-seeder at a farm west of Emmetsburg, IA, she and Philip talked about their future together and "their whole life rolling out before them, electric, and as alive as anything can be." That future lasted through 65 years of marriage, until Philip died October 2, 2011.

Death12 January 2010Marguerite Dora Montag died on 12 January 2010 at age 99 Marguerite Dora Wirtz, 99, died on January 12, 2010 at the West Bend Care Center. She was born July 10, 1910 near West Bend, the daughter of Henry and Luna Sloan Montag. Marguerite lived in the West Bend community her entire life and was a lifetime member of Sts. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church. She married Alfred Wirtz on January 24, 1933. Together they farmed 36 years before their reitrement and then enjoyed life in their comfortable home in West Bend. Marguerite was a past member of the Ladies Aid Society and the CDA of the church. She volunteered for a number of years at the Care Center, helping with activities for the residents. She was a quilter. Family and friends received many of her hand crafted quilt and lap robes. She provided quilts which were raffled at the fall parish dinner for a number of years. Our mother was an unfailing optimist, and her quick wit kept us smiling. She always told us how well she was cared for at the West Bend Care Center and liked our phone call visits more than anything. Her stories of her growing years and hard farm work, working alongside our Dad while taking wonderful care of 7 children, will long inspire us to do our part to honor her memory. Funeral services for Mrs. Wirtz will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church, West Bend with burial to follow in the West Bend Cemetery. Visitation is from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Harris Funeral Home in West Bend.
