Life EventDateDescription
MarriageBenno Leonard Hamburg married Mary Gosser at first marriage for him.
Birth25 April 1923Benno Leonard Hamburg was born on 25 April 1923 at Wisconsin.
He was the son of Edward Adolph Hamburg Sr. and Martha W. Peters.
Death16 October 2005Benno Leonard Hamburg died on 16 October 2005 at age 82 Benno Leonard Hamburg, age 82, died in his sleep at his LaValle home on Sunday morning, Oct. 16, 2005. He was born on April 25, 1923, to Edward and Martha Hamburg on the family farm near Wonewoc. Ben graduated from Wonewoc High School in 1941, and was active in school, activities including football, basketball and boxing. He then went to Platteville State Teachers College where he played football all four years and received his degree after taking time off to serve his country in World War II in the U.S. Army. He came back from the Army with a bride, Mary Gosser of Cleveland. They lived in Platteville and then Mineral Point, where Ben taught agriculture at the high school. Shortly afterwards Ben and Mary moved to Illinois with son Gary, as Ben began a long and fruitful career with Babson Brothers Company of Chicago. He initially was an instructor in the Babson Brothers Dealer Training School, and then became the regional manager for the state of Illinois. He returned to the Dealer Training School as its director and then became the national service manager in the early 1960s, a position that he held until his retirement in 1986. The career change to Babson precipitated a move to Elgin, Ill., in 1951, where he lived for more than 30 years and raised his family. Ben was active in the Lutheran Church over his life, serving as an elder and holding other positions of service. He became a member of St. Peters when he retired to the Reedsburg area in 1986, and has been a member of Zion Lutheran Church, LaValle, for the past 10 years. He belonged to the American Legion in LaValle. Ben married Liz in 1995 and moved back to Lake Redstone, near which he had spent his early years of retirement. Ben loved his family and friends and was known for the annual family get-togethers that he hosted at his home near Lake Redstone starting in 1975. He will be remembered by his family as the "father of the modern day family reunion." There were potluck meals, a little beer, games, "Olympic Events", talent contests, and snipe hunts, to name a few activities. Everyone had a good time and looked forward to next year's reunion. He was known to play cards, and enjoyed golf for many years, but his passion was dancing. Ben did not ever "sit one out." If Mary, and then Elizabeth, wanted to catch their breath, he would find a partner to do the famous "Hamburg Waltz," a dance for every occasion and tune. He was also known to lead the "Bird Walk" at wedding receptions and other special events. He always had a good time. He loved gardening and had his "Garden of Eatin'" at the cabin. He was a jack-of-all-trades, and mastered many. He loved photography and took pictures during his travels, which he framed with his own materials. His woodworking was professional in quality. He made many pieces for his own home, his family and friends. Ben worked hard, and played hard - he loved to be busy. He was caring and sharing. Ben helped his brothers and sisters out in many ways and was always there to provide a helping hand to his friends. He loved life, lived it fully for 82 years, and is now with his Maker. He is happy today. We should be happy for him and remember the good times we had together with him. He was one of 10 brothers and sisters, six of whom have preceded him in death: Esther Schroeder, Albert, August "Gus," Arthur, Walter and Alvin Hamburg. He is survived by his brother, Edward of Manitowoc; and sisters, Ruby Connors of Wonewoc, and Edna Murdoch of Prairie Grove, Ark. He was the beloved husband of Mary, his first wife, who preceded him in death in 1994. He is also survived by his second wife, Elizabeth (nee Hoffmann); son, Gary (Linda) of Chicago, Ill; daughter, Gail (Reggie) Carlton of Lafayette, Ind; grandchildren, Jeffrey (Bonnie) of Jefferson City, Mo., Anne (Samuel) Yohannes of Atlanta, Ga., Katherine (Gary) Rose of Buffalo Grove, Ill., Benjamin (Candace) Bertram of Lexington, Ky., and Megan LaGoy of Clarks Hall, Ind; and great-grandchildren, Zachary Hamburg, Nicholas Bertram, Chelsea and Brayden LaGoy. He is also survived by the family of his loving wife, Elizabeth; sons, Drs. David (Anne) Hoffmann of Mauston, and Dr. Douglas (Marge) Hoffmann of Suwanee, Ga; daughter, Barbara (Lawrence) Flowers of Princeton, Ill; and grandchildren, Vincent, Amanda and Emily Hoffmann, Lauren and Christopher Flowers. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2005, at ST. PETER'S EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH in Reedsburg with Pastor Ed Iverson officiating. Interment with military rites will be in Pine Eden Cemetery at Wonewoc. The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday at the HOOF FUNERAL HOME in Reedsburg. There will also be visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Zion Ev. Lutheran Church or the American Legion Post in LaValle would be appreciated. The Hoof Funeral Home is serving the family.
