When her father died she and her family moved to the Spokane Valley to her grandparents dry land wheat farm. She went to Chester Elementary and West Valley High School and St. Luke's School of Nursing where she became a Registered Nurse. She enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served at Fort Wright before joining the Air Force during WWII as a flight nurse where she traveled the world. She participated in many essential military flights nursing wounded soldiers the crew flew out from battlefields and prisoner of war camps in Germany.

She was a beautiful Swedish girl and while in New York City was asked to pose in uniform for the front cover of Air Force and This Week magazine. Her picture was also in Life Magazine in the 50th anniversary issue of the invasion of Normandy article and hangs on the Hometown Heros wall in the Spokane Valley Applebee's. Her uniform is a part of the Fairchild Air Force Museum. She was proud to serve her country and serve her community through nursing and remained active in her veteran and alumni associations until she was no longer able to participate. Frances married Roe Crabtree and opened the Garland Freezer, an ice cream store, in the early fifties.

She settled into a career of nursing working at different hospitals in Spokane as an RN. She raised four boys; Doug, Tim, Jim and John. She was interested in everything about learning and collected books, antiques and history. She was an accomplished seamstress, knitter and baker; known for her angel food cakes, chocolate chip cookies and coffee. Frances had a varied and interesting career including nursing, teaching, and even had a health program on KHQ Radio.

She continued her education throughout her life and loved to travel the world. She taught at the Spokane Public Vocational School, and volunteered at the Spokane Prevocational Training Center and the Inland Northwest Red Cross where she received national recognition for her service with the local civil defense preparedness-training program. When Frances and Roe retired they lived at their lake place in Sandpoint, Idaho and volunteered for the Pend Oreille Fishing Club in Sandpoint, Idaho. Frances was the victim of progressive Alzheimers and following her husband's death was a resident at Park Place Retirement Community in the Special Care unit. She died peacefully Saturday, February 11, 2006.

A family service will be held at a later date.

Smither, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur W. Smither, who changed wedding vows Saturday night. It was at 8 o'clock that Dr. Irving A. Fox officiated before a background of iris and snapdragons.

The altar candles were lighted by Mr. Fred Broer, and Mr. Bert Broer. A trio composed of Miss Betty Clark, Miss Mary Copley and Miss Mabel Elizabeth Fox sang "I Love You Truly" before the bridal party entered. Miss Minnie Miller was the accompanist, Of white slipper satin was the bridal gown.

The bodice was gathered and made with sweetheart neckline. The sleeves were long and ended in points over each wrist. The paneled skirt terminated in a short train. Her full length tulle veil was edged in lace and cascaded from a seed pearl crown. She carried white cala lilies and freesias.

Attendants Wear Print Frocks The maids of honor were Miss Carol Cooper and Miss Doris Crabtree. They wore identical frocks of pink and blue silk print embellished with bunches of flowers. The skirts were full and the sleeves were short. They carried bouquets of pastel carnations and freesias. Mr. Ralph Smith stood with his brother as best man and the ushers were Mr. Rolland Clark, Mr. Bert Broer, Mr. Fred Broer, Jr. and Mr. John Goffrier. For her daughter's wedding Mrs. Thomas wore a floor length navy blue silk crepe gown and a corsage of pink roses. Mrs. Smith was gowned in a black silk printed frock and her flowers were roses.

A reception in the church parlors followed the wedding. The bride's table was centered with a bouquet of iris and freesia: flanked by white candles. Mrs Robert E. Keuscher cut the cake and Mrs. Bert Broer assisted Mrs. Fred Broer, presidec at the punch bowl and assisting were Miss Ellen and Miss Phyllis Morley, Miss Helen and Mist Mary Virginia Hatfield and Mist Alice Goffrier. Mrs. Oswald Morley passed the guest book and Mrs. Rolland Clark was is charge of the gift table. Leave on Trip When the couple left on thei trip the bride wore an antique brown ensemble with a cap and yellow blouse.

Her hat and accessories were brown and her corsage was of yellow rosebuds. Mr. and Mrs. Smither will reside in Salem at 1817 Lee street. The newlyweds are graduates of Salem high school and Mr. Smither is now with the First National bank.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Darrell Thomas; daughters, Sandra (Antonio) Lourenco of San Bernardino, Louise (David) Bock of Grass Valley, Linda (Don) Wahlund of Eureka; son, Duncan Thomas of Fortuna; brother, Jack Branlund; and sister, Sarah Holmes. Surviving grandchildren are Jessica and Benjamin Wahlund, Timothy Lourenco, and Beth, James, and Michael Bock.

Helen was a Girl Scout as a young girl and continued as a leader for her daughters. She was an active member of the Eureka Garden Club, Emblem Club, and active participant in the Boy Scouts with her sons.

Her talents were many including sewing, gardening, quilting and tole painting. Friends and family benefited from her many talents.

Helen and Darrell later moved to the Salton Sea and recently moved to Thousand Palms. Until recently they enjoyed spending time at their house in San Felipe, Mexico. For many years they were camp hosts at Mammoth Lakes, Bishop, and Napa.

At her request no services will be held. Interment will be at Riverside National Cemetery.
