He grew to manhood in the Town of Preston and on December 21, 1916 he was united in marriage to Annette Strand at Winona, Minnesota. They farmed near Blair all their married life. Toraason has been a resident of Grand View Home for the past year. His wife preceded him in death. Survivors include two sons, Lyman and Richard of Blair; three daughters, Mrs. Norman (Lennice) Thompson, rural Blair; Mrs. Ruth Reeves, LaCrosse; and Mrs. Eldon (Donna) Friede, Blair; one brother, Thomas of rural Blair; one sister, Mrs. Paula Hendrickson, Seattle, Washington; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Morris Wangen, Paul Fredrickson, Lloyd Anderson, Norman Anderson, Floyd Bradley and Henry Knutson. Frederixon-Jack Funeral Home in Blair had charge of arrangements.

She became ill last July and after seeking medical and surgical care did not regain her health. Anette (Nettie) Otilda Strand was born December 21, 1896 in Ettrick Township, a daughter of the late Peter Strand and Louise Leque Strand. She was the oldest of four children. She was baptized and confirmed in the North Beaver Creek Lutheran church by the Rev. Ole Gulbrandson. She was married December 21, 1916 to Lynn Toraason who survives her and the couple since their marriage have resided on the Toraason farm in the Town of Preston. Other survivors are two sons, Lyman and Richard, Blair; three daughters, Mrs. Norman (Lennice) Thompson, Blair; Mrs. Ruth Reeves, Blair who has been caring for her mother at home and Mrs. Eldon Friede, Whitehall; two sisters, Mrs. John Hellekson and Mrs. Goodwin Nelson, both of Blair; a brother, Palmer Strand, Milwaukee, and nine grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Zion Lutheran church Saturday at 2 p.m., the Rev. E.E. Olson officiating. Pallbearers were six nephews, Otto Odegaard, Paul Hellekson, David Strand, Gale Toraason, Thomas Toraason Jr. and Robert Burt. Mrs. A.J. Sather and Mrs. F.W. Herreid sang “My God and I” and “The Lord is My Shepherd,” with Mrs. Lawrence Holven at the organ. Burial was in the church cemetery. Gibson-Frederixon Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Lyman is survived by his wife, Lorraine; three children, Ronald (Cynthia) Toraason of Sammamish, Wash., Diane Toraason of Berlin, Wis., and Larry (Dana) Toraason of Slinger, Wis; five grandchildren, Brian, Lindsay, Erik, Inger and Claire Toraason; and two sisters, Ruth Reeves of Hartford, Wis., and Donna (Eldon) Friede of Blair. In addition to his parents, Lyman was preceded in death by a sister- and brother-in-law, Lennice (Norman) Thompson. Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 14, at Zion Lutheran Church, with burial in the church cemetery, both in Blair. Pastor Mark Kvale will officiate. Visitation will be Saturday, March 14, from 11 a.m. until time of services at the church. Jack Funeral Home in Blair is assisting the family with arrangements. CORRECTION: Lyman P. Toraason — A surviving brother, Richard (Carol) Toraason of Blair, was inadvertantly omitted from Lyman P. Toraason’s obituary published Wednesday.

Ruth was born July 6, 1926, in Whitehall to Lynn and Annette (Strand) Toraason. She attended Blair schools and was baptized and confirmed in Zion Lutheran Church in Blair. Ruth went to nurses training at Ancker Hospital in St. Paul. Ruth was married to and divorced from Irving Reeves. Ruth worked in Labor and Delivery at Luther Hospital in Eau Claire prior to her retirement from Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse where she worked for 27 years. Ruth was an accomplished seamstress and sewed clothing for herself, friends and family. She would look in a department store window, draw the picture of a dress or outfit she liked and would go home and design the same outfit by piecing together patterns to look similar. Ruth also enjoyed shopping and had an eye for a good sale. Ruth loved her grandchildren dearly and enjoyed spending time with them. Her last years were spent living with her daughter and family in Hartford under the care of her daughter, Linda. She enjoyed watching church services on Sunday morning from Bethel Church on television, since she was mostly confined to home due to her health issues. Ruth is survived by her daughter, Linda (Moody) Bragg of Hartford; three grandchildren, Jason Bragg of Cedarburg, Tanya Bragg of Hartford and Tami (Jason) Kramer of Woodstock, Ga; two great-grandchildren, Joseph Thomas Kramer and Jenna Marie Kramer both of Woodstock; a brother, Richard (Carol) Toraason of Blair; a sister, Donna (Eldon) Friede of Blair; many cousins, nieces and nephews and in addition, her very special friend, Viv (Eddie) Walleser of La Crosse. In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by a sister, Lennice (Norman) Thompson of Ettrick; and a brother, Lyman (Lorraine) Toraason of Blair. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 3, in Blair Lutheran Church West with burial in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, both in Blair. Pastor Barbara Bruneau will officiate. Thompson, age 71, of Ettrick passed away Sept. 13, 2009, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse. She was born Aug. 10, 1938, to Norman and Lennice (Toraason) Thompson. She attended the Beach School and graduated from Blair High School with the class of 1956. She was a loyal employee of Trempealeau County for more than 40 years, retiring in 1997. She served as a Deputy County Clerk and worked for the Unified Board and the Trempealeau County Superintendent of Schools. Following retirement she worked part time for John's One Stop in Ettrick and for the Trempealeau County Shopper. Nancy was a dedicated member of North Beaver Creek Lutheran Church and served as a Sunday school teacher for small children for many years. She was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers and the Blair-Taylor Wildcats. She volunteered with Trempealeau County Senior Services and knit many layettes for missions. She knit sweaters for many new babies and shared with others the flowers she grew in her garden. Although she was not a mother, she gained much joy from mothering other people, especially her nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and nephews. In recent weeks she continued to spend happy times with the latest generation, playing hide-and-seek and board games, and faithfully attending their birthday parties and activities. She remembered the birthdays of many relatives, neighbors and former co-workers by sending cards, baked and brought meals to those who were ill or grieving, and drove elderly friends to the grocery store and appointments. She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Sally Anderson. She is survived by a sister, Leatrice (Ron) Guenther; brother-in-law, Don (Gerda) Anderson; two nieces, Leann (Kevin) Hagen and Kristin (Tim) Brantner; three nephews, John (Jessica) Anderson, Rodney (Melissa) Guenther and Rory Guenther; four grand-nieces; and six grand-nephews; and many relatives and friends. Services for Nancy will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the North Beaver Creek Faith Lutheran Church. Pastor Liz Albertson will officiate. Visitation will be held from 4 until 8 p.m. today (Tuesday, Sept. 15) at the Jack Funeral Home in Blair, and also one hour prior to the services at the church on Wednesday. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The love she radiated to others will live on for generations.

She married the love of her life, John Byers, on May 5, 2001, in the First Presbyterian Church in La Crosse where they were dedicated parishioners. Ten years of God Blessed Life was shared by the couple. John was blessed with infinite patience coping with Lillians multiple health problems and she subsequently resided at the Hillview Health Care Center, receiving precious care at the facilities over the past year. Lilly was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; a stepsister, Jean Byom; a stepbrother, Phillip Folkedahl; and a sister-in-law, Mary Myers. Lillian is survived by her husband, John; four sisters, Betty (Raul) Suarez of Rolling Meadows, Ill., Carol (Richard) Toraason of Blair, Roseann (Elwood) Knutson of Kenosha, and Anita (Jim) Goplin of Osseo, Wis; a stepsister, Beverly (Bob) Modahl of Galesville; and a sister-in-law, Nora Richardson of Florida. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 23, in the First Presbyterian Church in La Crosse with Pastor Taylor Haley officiating. Burial will be in the Rest Haven Cemetery in Blair at a later date. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. May the Almighty welcome a dedicated servant with a heavenly reunion.
