He was born May 26, 1919, in Council Bluffs to George E. and Clara (Jacobs) Koch. He was a 1937 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School. After high school he played second base for one of the Chicago Cubs farm teams. He served in the U.S. Army 81st Infantry Division World War II where he participated in one of the bloodiest battles of World War II - Peleliu. He was a plant operator for Iowa Power & Light for 30 years, retiring in 1979. He was a member of Fifth Avenue Methodist Church, International Brotherhood of Electricians Union Local No. 499, American Legion Post No. 2 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 737. He was a proud union man. Mr. Koch and his wife, Lois E. (Rockwell), were married March 21, 1942. Survivors in addition to his wife include daughter, Kathleen "Kitty" Prieto, and husband, William, of Omaha; son, Dan Koch, and wife, Connie, of Lampe, Mo; four grandchildren: Michelle Deutsch, Ryan Koch, Angela Koch and Matthew Prieto; five great-grandchildren. Visitation with the family will be Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home. The funeral will be Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Ed Clevenger of Fifth Avenue Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with a lunch following at Fifth Avenue Methodist Church. Memorials may be offered to research for asbestos-related diseases.
