Saturday, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 1755 Delhi St, Dubuque IA.

Gene was born November 12, 1926 in Dubuque, Iowa, son of George H. and Stella D. (Jecklin) Chappell. After graduating from Dubuque Senior High School in 1944, he joined and served in the US Navy, as a Pharmacists Mate 3 Class. He was also a member of the U.S. Navy Choir. He studied at University of Dubuque for a short time after.

He married Gerda Hanselmann on May 7, 1950 at St. John's Lutheran Church. The couple met during a combined choir between St. Marks and St. John's and they were married for 68 years. He was also a member of the original capital campaign committee, for the building of Luther Manor, Hillcrest. Eugene was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, and volunteered as a money counter, for many years.

He was employed and was a member of the Dubuque Typographical Union #22 for 40 years, working primarily in the composing room of the Dubuque Telegraph Herald.

Gene was a committeeman for the Boy Scouts of America troop 48, where he was bestowed the prestigious honor of membership in the Order of the Arrow.

He was a member of the Great River Amateur Radio Club, WB0QMA, and enjoyed talking to Ham Radio friends locally and around the world.

He loved bike riding with family and friends, and he frequented trails in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa. Besides biking, seldom was a day missed of walking with his usual friends, at the Mall.

Very dear to his heart was his Masonic involvement. He was a thirty second degree Mason and was active in the Shrine, Grotto, Knight Templar, High Twelve, Yorkrite, and Scottish Rite.

Beloved to Gene was his cottage get away in St. Donatus Iowa, where family and friends met for generations together, to fish the Tete De Morte creek, or sit and chat by the fire.

He is survived by his wife, Gerda Chappell of Dubuque; three children, Miriam J. Hoffman of Dubuque, Joan K. (David) Soltwisch of Minooka, IL, and Timothy G. (Darla) Chappell of Dubuque; five grandchildren, Ben and Adam (Jessica) Hoffman; Rochelle (Mark) Quiner, Juliene Soltwisch; and Kurtis (Rachael) Chappell; nine great grandchildren, Madlin, Colin, Nathan, Audrey, Kolton, Cora, Liam, Annette, Juliet; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and three siblings, George, Carlton and Joyce (Chappell) Van Drie.

Her survivors include a brother Eugene Chappell of Dubuque IA, her children: Brenda (Bill) Metz, Linda Van Drie, John Jr (Susan) Van Drie, and Janice Katsahnias, three grandchildren: Tom Katsahnias, Julie Katsahnias Hayden, and Laura Van Drie, and four great-grandchildren: Gabriel Katsahnias, Thomas Katsahnias, Emma Hayden, and Kate Hayden.

Joyce not only worked as a homemaker but as a bookkeeper at Gainer Bank in Hammond IN for many years.

She was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Lansing for more than 60 years.

Her hobbies included many volunteer committees at her church as well as being a member of the Junior Women’s Club, Biography Club, and a Bible study group. She also was an avid seamstress.

A military service will be held for the family on January 11th 2019 at Abraham Lincoln Military Cemetery in Elwood IL where John and Joyce will be buried next to each other.

On Saturday, January 12th, 2019 a memorial service will be held at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 19058 Burnham Ave., Lansing, Illinois at 11:00 am.

She was born on Aug. 25, 1921, in Table Mound Township, Dubuque County, daughter of John and Agnes (Crowley) Bakey. Sally graduated from the one-room schoolhouse in Key West, Iowa.

She married Jerome McClain in 1937 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dubuque; he preceded her in death. She later married Melvin "Mike" Kirk on June 25, 1970; he preceded her in death on Oct. 16, 2003.

Sally was formerly employed at General Dry Battery and with Stanley Home Products. Sally and Mike owned and operated Florine's Drug Store in Cuba City for several years. She was lastly employed at Southwest Health Care Center in Cuba City until she retired at the age of 76.

Sally was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Dubuque and later at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Cuba City. She currently was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church in Dubuque.

Sally enjoyed cooking and collecting recipes and will be remembered for frying all the fish Mike caught. Sally was very Irish and feisty with a witty sense of humor. She also was a very compassionate and caring person with a big heart. She enjoyed playing cards and being with her family, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are a daughter, Mary Lou (Sherman "Skip") Hutton, of Dubuque; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, David M. (Judy) Hutton, and their children, Ryan (Ashley) Hutton and Alex, of Indianola, Iowa, Stephen (Michelle) Hutton, and their children, Adam, Peter and Joshua, of Muscatine, Iowa, Ann (Kimball) Behning, of Springville, Iowa, and Sara (Steve) Bye, of Plainfield, Ill; three stepchildren, Karen Kirk, of Dubuque, Don (Mary) Kirk, of Key West, and Patti (Ron) Coates, of Dubuque; 11 stepgrandchildren; 22 stepgreat-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Hazel Bakey, of Dubuque, and Patricia Bakey, of Carpentersville, Ill; two brothers-in-law, Clem Simon, of Dubuque, and James Cox, of Rockford, Ill; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Lucille (Charles) Klaas, Margaret Simon, Laverne Cox and Ramona (Clarence) Ernzen; and five brothers, John (Callista) Bakey, James (Bernice) Bakey, Joseph (Margaret) Bakey, Frank Bakey and Robert Bakey; two brothers-in-law, Sylvester Duehr and Quinton Asbell; and a stepson, Ronald Kirk.

She married Quinton Asbell on Dec. 28, 1928, in Chicago; he preceded her in death on March 17, 1959. She later married Clarence B. Ernzen on May 4, 1972, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church; he preceded her in death on June 9, 1977.

Monie was employed at the former Dubuque Packing Co. for 25 years, retiring in 1972.

She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and Rosary Society, and was a former member of the John Deere Retirees and the Eagles Club Auxiliary.

Monie enjoyed playing euchre and poker, eating ice cream and lovingly crocheting afghans for her family, which they will always cherish. Her greatest joy was to be with her family.

Surviving are her son, Richard (MalSun) Asbell, of Colorado Springs, Colo; her grandchildren, whom she lived for, and who thought she hung the sun and moon, Jeff Asbell, and his children, Jeffrey, Jeremy and Alicia, and their mother, Linda, of Bolingbrook, Ill., Susan (Pat) Norton, and their children, Ryan and Kyle, of Warrenville, Ill., Collette (Mark) Meek, and their children, Leah, Breanna, and Mark Jr., of Peoria, Ariz., Richard (Chris) Asbell, P.D., and their children, Nick and Tyler, of Dubuque, Sarah Sumner, and her children, Cody and Kristin, and their father, Pat Mona (Tom) Asbell Burbach, of Dubuque, Nanette (Bill Lighthall) Asbell, of Aurora, Ill., and Anni (Steve) Moysner, of Bon Carbo, Colo; and two great-great-grandchildren; 13 step-grandchildren; and 10 step-great-grandchildren; a stepdaughter, Rita (Dave) Hunt, of Peosta, Iowa; a stepson, Gerald (Geraldine) Ernzen, of Marion, Iowa; daughters-in-law, Carole Asbell, of DeKalb, Ill., and Janaan Asbell, of Aurora; a sister, Celestine (Sally) Kirk, of Dubuque, sisters-in-law, Hazel Bakey, of Dubuque, Pat Bakey, of Carpentersville, Ill., Helen (Les) Engler, of Durango, Iowa, and Florence Ernzen, of Dubuque; brothers-in-law, Clem Simon, Jim Cox and Louie Ernzen, all of Dubuque; numerous nieces and nephews who adored her; and her best gal pal, Dorothy Brothers, of Dubuque.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Donald Asbell; daughter-in-law, Mary Asbell; three sisters, Lucille (Carl) Klass, Margaret Simon and Vernie Cox; five brothers, John (Calista), Frank, James (Bernice), Joseph (Marge) and Robert Bakey; brothers-in-law, Mike Kirk, Sylvester "Hash" Duehr, Francis (Marie), Ray (Ardella), Harold (Florence) and Wilfred Ernzen; and sisters-in-law, Bess and Jayne Ernzen.

Skip was born June 30, 1937 in Dubuque, Iowa to Sherman Jr. and Lillian (Koester) Hutton. He graduated from East Dubuque High School in 1955.

He married Mary Lou (McClain) Hutton on January 27, 1962 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. They celebrated 56 years of marriage and were blessed with four children.

His love of sports showed in the many ball teams he played with and many, many rounds of golf he played. After high school, Skip signed with the White Sox organization as a pitcher. Skip served in the Army in Stuttgart, Germany and played on a winning baseball team for the 7th Army in 1958-1959. He played on baseball teams for Lange’s Insurance and played in four World Fast Pitch Softball Tournaments. He also played for many local teams including the Lux Club, Kall Inn, Interstate Power Co., Halls and many more. Skip played in the Kiwanis Softball Tournament in 1987. He was elected to the Dubuque Fast Pitch Hall of Fame in 1986 and also served as President of the organization for 6 years.

Skip retired from Interstate Power Company/Alliant Energy after 43 years. He then worked as a ranger at The Meadows Golf Course for 17 years. Skip was recognized as Volunteer of the Year at Hillcrest Family Services where he volunteered at Reflections in the Park for 16 years.

Skip was a people person who brightened the lives of most everyone he met. He was always smiling and loved swapping stories with great friends. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou; four children, David (Judy) Hutton of Indianola, Stephen (Michelle) Hutton of Muscatine, Ann (Kimball) Behning of Springville, Sara (Steve) Bye of Plainfield, IL; seven grandchildren Ryan (Ashley), Alex, Adam, Peter, and Joshua Hutton, Riley and Brady Bye; four great-grandchildren William, London, Oliver and Adrian Hutton; sister-in-law Connie Hutton of Albuquerque, NM; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Patricia (Hutton) Burgmeier, brother-in-law Jack Burgmeier, brother Michael Hutton, mother-in-law Sally Kirk, and his nephews Ted Burgmeier and Andrew Burgmeier.

Taylor, Caleb Lovins and Peyton Lovins.
Funeral services for Mr. Hatley were held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 13 at Powell Funeral Home with Rev. Kim Bridges officiating. Visitation was held from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment followed at Mt. Zion Cemetery.

Hilda was known as the "Walsh Lady" from her 30 years in the second floor at the Walsh Stores. She was a former member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Hilda was an avid bowler who was proud of her accomplishments. She enjoyed her flowers and making floral arrangements. Hilda loved feeding the birds and squirrels by hand. She was an accomplished baker and considered it her "therapy." Anyone who has tried her pies or cookies can attest to her baking ability. Survivors: a daughter, Linda (Luis) Moscoso, of Dubuque; two sons, David (Mary) Ostrander, of Dubuque, Michael (Elaine) Ostrander, of Potosi, Wis; a stepdaughter, Nancy (Terry) Nix, of Lancaster, Wis; a daughter-in-law, Pat Ostrander, of Dubuque; a brother, William Moore, of Dubuque; a brother-in-law, Don Gilligan, of Dubuque; 17 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren; She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, and four sisters, one in infancy. A Hilda G. Kuennen Memorial Fund has been established. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Bethany Home for their care and concern for Hilda. A special thank-you to Hospice of Dubuque, who made Hilda's last day the most comfortable she has had in quite a while.
