Duane, son of Leonard and Agnes (Kluender) Stieve was born Aug. 5, 1932 in Baraboo. He was a graduate of Baraboo High School, Class of 1950. Duane enlisted in the US Army and proudly served as Sergeant in the 25thInfantry from July 1950 until his honorable discharge in July 1953. While employed by Imhoff in Madison he was united in marriage to Dorothy Vertein on Feb. 23, 1957 at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Rock Springs. Duane then worked for Findorf, Dudon, Baraboo Concrete and Caflisch Construction throughout his working career. Duane was a very active member of the North Freedom area; he volunteered for the North Freedom Fire Dept for 15 years; served on the North Freedom Village Board for 25 years and he dedicated 38 years to the North Freedom American Legion. One of the highlights for Duane over the last few years was that he was able to participate in the Badger Honor Flight on Oct. 10, 2015. He enjoyed watching Nascar, sports including hunting, fishing and golfing.

Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Dorothy; sons, Duane Jr. (Kathy), Dale (Laurie) and Daryl (Janet); grandchildren; Allen Jr., Shelly, Shawn (Amanda), Jesse, Heather (Aaron) Green, Nathan, Amber (Patrick) Pierce and Logan; great-grandchildren, Traton, Alexis and Autumn Winecke, Ethan and Axton Winecke, Kaelyn and Kason Winecke, Porter and Ashton Pierce; great-great granddaughter, Kendyl Winecke as well as brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ken (LaVeta) Vertein, Marilyn Vertein, Faith Vertein, Marie Vertein and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Diane Winecke; grandson, David Stieve and brothers-in-law, George, Allen and Carl Vertein.

A public visitation for Duane will be held at Redlin Funeral Home on Sunday, Nov. 8, 2020 from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. Due to limited seating, a private family funeral service will be held at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Rock Springs with Pastor David Karow officiating. Burial will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery where military rites will be conducted.

Diane, the daughter of Duane and Dorothy (Vertein) Stieve, was born on March 14, 1959 in Madison. She was baptized on April 19, 1959 and confirmed on April 15, 1973 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Rock Springs, and was later married at St. John's to Allen N. Winecke on July 30, 1977.

Diane had been employed originally as a mail carrier, beginning on Jan. 27, 1979, and later as a clerk at the Reedsburg Post Office. She enjoyed snowmobiling, motorcycling, gardening, working with the community and especially spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by the father of her children, Allen N. Winecke of Rock Springs; three children, Allen M. Winecke and Susie Peters of Reedsburg, Shelly D. Winecke and Brad Brandt of Reedsburg, and Shawn A. Winecke of Baraboo; three, soon to be four, grandchildren, Traton, and twins, Alexis and Autumn; her parents, Duane and Dorothy Stieve of North Freedom; three brothers, Duane D. (Tami) Stieve of Rock Springs, Dale (Laurie) Stieve of North Freedom, and Daryl (Janet) Stieve of Reedsburg; aunts; uncles; nieces; and nephews; her best friend of 40 years, Rita Schipper of Baraboo; many other relatives and friends.

Diane was preceded in death by her grandparents, Agnes and George Vertein, and Leonard and Agnes Stieve.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 10, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Rock Springs with Pastor Paul Schroeder officiating. Interment will take place in the Oak Hill Cemetery in North Freedom. Friends may call on Thursday, Dec. 9, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Redlin Funeral Home, 401 Madison Ave., in Baraboo, and at the church on Friday, from 10 a.m. until the time of services.

Allen graduated from Reedsburg High School in 1949. He was employed by Fauerbach Brewery and Rayovac Corporation before starting at Oscar Mayer Company, retiring in 1993, after 43 years. He served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War and was on active duty from 1951-1953, spending 13 months in Korea. Allen was able to go on an Honor Flight in 2015, and was a life-long member of the local V.F.W #7694. Upon retirement he kept busy on their farmette, raising beef cattle, lawn work and gardening and was proud to give his produce to others. He loved the outdoors and had a passion for hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marie; 3 daughters, Cheri (Tim) Brickl, Joanne (Dean) Walsh, Sandy Stanis; 10 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Dorothy (Duane) Stieve and Marilyn Vertein; and a brother, Ken (LaVeta); sisters in law, Alice Liebmann, Faith Vertein; brother in law, Joe Donaubauer. Further survived by nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Rick in 1974, 3 infant children, brothers George and Carl, sister in law Irene Donaubauer; and a brother in law, Gerald Liebmann. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 24, 2017 at St. James Lutheran Church, Prairie du Sac, WI with Pastor Bradley Pearson officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Prairie du Sac Cemetery.

A visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday August 23, 2017 at Hooverson Funeral Home, Sauk City, WI.

Kenneth, son of George and Agnes (Steinhorst) Vertein was born May 4, 1934. He was baptized in Christ on May 27, 1934 at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Rock Springs and was confirmed in that faith on March 2, 1948 also in Rock Springs. On May 8, 1954 he was united in marriage to LaVeta Kapelka and enjoyed 68 years of marriage.

He graduated from Reedsburg High School and furthered his studies by attending UW-Platteville and later obtained a master's degree in education from UW-Madison. Ken was employed in education for his entire working career, spanning over 30 years. He was an elementary teacher, Principal of different schools and an Administrator for the Baraboo School District. He was a lifetime member of St. Johns Lutheran Church and enjoyed participating on their bowling team for over 50 years. He was a man of faith and always put God and his family first. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting deer, elk, turkey (to name a few), earning numerous awards and trophys. Ken held many offices with Conservation Congress; he was active with North Freedom Rod and Gun Club for many years. He took pride in their lake home (Keneta Kove) at Swan Lake.

Survivors include his loving wife, LaVeta; children, Regina (Bob) Derlein, Maria (Mark Titel) Vertein, Kerri Vertein, Annie (Brian) Standiford; ten grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, (all who he loved dearly). He is further survived by his sisters, Dorothy Stieve and Marilyn Vertein; sisters-in-law, Faith Vertein and Marie Vertein and brother-in-law, Lester Kapelka.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, George Vertein, Allen Vertein, Carl Vertein; son, Tim Vertein and grandson, Michael Baxter.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, March 17, 2023 at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, Baraboo, WI with Pastor Tim Kuske officiating. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of services at the church. Military honors will be conducted at the church following the service.Private family burial will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery in North Freedom.

He was an avid sheepshead and cribbage player, and a great outdoorsman.

He is survived by two children, Jeff (Jan) Vertein of Rock Springs and Judy (Rick) Urben of Oregon; five grandchildren, Tyler, Dustin, Dillon, Aimee and Connor; four siblings, Allen (Marie) Vertein of Sauk City, Kenneth (LaVeta) Vertein of Baraboo, Dorothy (Duane) Stieve of North Freedom, and Marilyn Vertein of Baraboo; other relatives and friends.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, George Jr.

Death16 February 1929Johanna Caroline Perlenberg died on 16 February 1929 at age 81 Mrs. August Klitzke, aged 81 years, 4 months, 29 days, died at the home of her son Reinhold in Baraboo, Saturday morning, Feb. 16,1929, she being sick only one day. Mrs. Klitzke was a native of Germany born Sept. 17, 1847. She and her husband who preceded her in death on June 6, 1915, came to this country and made their home near Reedsburg both being members of the St. Peters Lutheran Church of Reedsburg until the year of 1890 they moved on a farm to Ableman. After the death of her husband she made her home with her son Reinhold. The funeral was held from the home in Baraboo Thursday at 10:30 and then taken to the Lutheran Church in Ableman where she had been a faithful member, and laid beside her husband. Her pallbearers were her grandsons George and Harold Gehrke, Ewald Klipp, Elmer Klitzke, Harold Zautke, Ralph Zautke. She leaves eight children: Reinhold and Albert of Baraboo; Mrs. Bertha Gehrke and Hugo of Ableman; Mrs. Mary Klipp of Loganville; Mrs. Anna Zautke of Reedsburg; George of London, Minn., August of Madison. Her son William died in June, 1917 at the age of 44 years. Taken from the Reedsburg Free Press of 2-21-1929.
