In 1828, as the tumultuous election between Andrew Jackson and the defeated John Quincy Adams ended, the United States was on the move.
Noah Merritt and his family, like many other Americans, took advantage of recent advancements in transportation and moved from a small Massachusetts town to the bustling southern seaport of New Orleans. Noah bought a small house for his 4-year-old son, Lucius, and his sisters, Mary Merritt and Betsy (Elizabeth) Merritt.
Shortly thereafter, Mary married William Bagley, Noah’s new business partner, and the tight-knit family began to grow.
In 1852, Lucius, 28, married Eliza “Lizzie” McGaughy, a Canadian-born Louisiana resident. The young couple lived in New Orleans for six years and had several children. In 1858, Lucius decided to move his growing family to Pensacola and enter the thriving lumber industry. The growth of their family, along with recent wealth, prompted the Merritts to acquire a black slave called Aunt Lucy.
Just as Lucius Merritt was becoming a successful businessman, and Lizzie was settling into their new home, tragedy struck. In April 1859, 2-year-old Sammie died of a cold. Newborn mortality was one of many problems facing the infant population in the United States.
The following year, Florida became the third state to secede from the Union, making the future unclear for the Merritt family and Southerners as a whole. In 1861, Union forces gained control of Pensacola, forcing Confederate sympathizers to flee. Lucius sent Lizzie, her Irish-immigrant mother, Jane McGaughy, and the Merritt children to Montgomery, Ala., while he stayed behind to protect his lumber investments.
The Pensacola residents who stayed behind were given an ultimatum: sign an oath of allegiance to the Union, or become political prisoners within the brick walls and iron bars of Fort Pickens. Lucius refused to sign the oath. While Lucius was detained in Fort Pickens, the Merritt couple wrote numerous letters to each other, exhibiting the despair found in the often-forgotten side of war beyond the battlefield.
In one letter, Lizzie laments: “Oh Dear Lucius, My Dear Lucius, I wish you were here with me ... when will we be able to get home again? I am beginning to realize our situation and I can see nothing comforting to look forward to.” Lucius did not stay in prison long. He was released before the war ended and reunited with Lizzie and the children in New Orleans.
A few days before Christmas 1868, tragedy struck again. Lizzie, whose health had been waning throughout the war, died. She was 38. After the war, although much of the South was in ruin, Pensacola’s shipping industry was booming. Lucius, while still grieving, moved back to Pensacola where he thrived in shipping.
Lizzie’s body was exhumed from a New Orleans cemetery and laid to rest in St. Michael’s near her child, Sammie.
All of the following family members lived in Lucius’ North Hill home until their deaths: William Bagley died in 1871 at age 82. Jane McGaughy died in 1881 at age 80. Elizabeth Merritt died in 1887 at the astounding age of 98. Mary Merritt Bagley died in 1891 at age 91.
