Birth29 April 1926Ralph Paul Rupp was born on 29 April 1926 at Iowa.
He was the son of George Anthony Rupp and Mary Elizabeth Kohns.
Marriage31 January 1953Ralph Paul Rupp married Herta L. Schaufler on 31 January 1953.
Death14 October 2018Ralph Paul Rupp died on 14 October 2018 at age 92 Ralph Paul Rupp was born April 29, 1926 in Cherokee, Iowa. His parents were George and Mary (Kohns) Rupp. He attended his early school years at Maryhill School, and later at the Quimby Schools. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the US occupation into Germany, specifically Nuremberg, Germany. He wanted it written that the day he was drafted was one of the best days of his life, as it was through his service days in Germany that he met “the love of my life”—his future wife, Herta Schaufler. They married January 31, 1953, and became parents of three children: Anna, Sharon and Brian.

Ralph was an active member in the Maryhill Church, and later became a member at Immaculate Conception. He received 3rd and 4th Degrees in the Knights of Columbus. He served as president of the Cherokee County Pork Producers for 2 years. His passion was farming, and he was active in soil conservation. He was among some of the first farmers in the area to use contour farming, as well as no-till farming. He was a 19-year colon cancer survivor and was grateful for every day. He enjoyed his coffee time with friends at The Family Table. His family knew him as someone who was fascinated with all kinds of gadgets, loved to laugh, and was ever the optimist. Ralph and Herta loved to travel, and were able to visit her homeland of Germany several times. In his travels, he was never “lost”, but was “taking the scenic route.”

On Sunday, October 14, 2018, Ralph passed away at Heartland Care Center in Marcus, Iowa. He was 92. He was preceded in death by his wife, Herta, daughter, Sharon and granddaughter, Christa; six brothers: Norbert, Raymond, Carl, Fr. Urban, Lawrence and Sylvester; four sisters: Florence, Sr. Christina, Sr. Catherine and Monica.

Survivors include his daughter, Anna (Bruce) Schmadeke of Marcus, IA, and his son, Brian Rupp of rural Cherokee, IA; great-grandchildren, Jarren and Brenna Heitter and their father, Seth Heitter of Mt. Morris, IL; one brother, Floyd Rupp, as well as many nieces and nephews.

After her education, Herta worked in Nurnberg, Germany, where she met her future husband, Ralph Rupp, who was in the U. S. Army. They married in Germany on January 31, 1953.

Herta came to the United States in 1953 and lived on the farm in Cherokee County. She was proud to become a U.S. citizen. She and her husband raised their 3 children, Anna, Sharon and Brian. Herta dedicated her life to providing her children with love and care, especially to Sharon, who had special needs.

After living 60 years on the farm, Herta and her husband moved to the Beck in Cherokee in January 2013. She enjoyed making new friends in the Beck community.

Herta will be remembered for her outstanding cooking skills and her compassion for all people, especially those who were lonely or needed a friend. Her family will remember her perseverant attitude as she went through difficult and challenging times. Her faith in Christ never wavered.

She was very involved in the Maryhill Church community, Immaculate Conception Parish, Catholic Daughters, ARC (organization for citizens with special needs) and was a volunteer at Cherokee Work Services. She enjoyed her monthly German Club gatherings for over 50 years.
