She was born February 25, 1910 to Mathias and Laura (Norbeck) Haugen in Geddes, South Dakota. She was baptized at Morningside Lutheran Church in Charles Mix Co. in South Dakota. At age 10 her family moved to Redfield, SD where she attended elementary school and high school. She married Walter Brink in 1933, and two daughters were added to this union. In 1936, they moved to White Bear, MN and later to Kankakee, IL where they lived nine years. In 1945, they moved to Cohasset, MN where they established their own dairy farm. Hazel attended Yankton College and later UMD where she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. She taught school for 36 years including teaching in Spink County, SD; Kankakee, IL; and Grand Rapids District 318. In Grand Rapids she was the music director for the rural schools of District 318, a position she held for 30 years.
Hazel was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Redfield, SD where she was confirmed and married. In Kankakee, IL, she was a member of St. Ansgar’s Lutheran where she served as choir director and organized the Missionary Society. She became a member of Zion Lutheran Church in 1945, directing the choir for many years. She was an associate member of Epiphany Lutheran in Apache Junction, AZ. She was a member of Ruth Circle and WELCA. Hazel was active in her community as a member of the Itasca Art Association, Itasca Historical Society, Alpha Delta Kappa, MEA, NEA, REAM, Over 50 Club in Cohasset, MN and the Itasca Hospital Auxiliary, where she volunteered many years. She was a member of Sons of Norway and served as the director of the Nordstjernan Singers. Her volunteer activities also included Leisure Hills and the Itasca Nursing Home. In her later years, Hazel painted many pictures and wrote and published a children’s story book, “The Runaway Little Red Lawn Mower”.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; parents; two brothers, Sigurd and Raymond Haugen; two sisters, Mabel Rye and Karen Strand; a foster child, Martin Carter; a foster grandchild, Lon Carter; and a son-in-law, Lee Sisler.
She leaves to mourn two daughters, Yulah Sisler of Austin, TX and Loya (Robert) Olsen of Rochester, MN; foster daughter-in-law, Arvayda Carter of Park Rapids, MN; foster son, Gerald (Judy) Hoffman of Grand Rapids, MN; six grandsons, 11 great-grandchildren; one gr-great-grandchild; three foster grandchildren; four foster great-grandchildren; one foster gr-great-grandchild and many dear relatives and friends.
God granted Hazel a long and fruitful life and she used her talents in serving her church and her community. She loved her family dearly and felt each one was very special.

Visitation: 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Sunday, October 26th, 2014 in the Andrews-Libbey Funeral Home and also 10 AM until the 11 AM Funeral Service Monday October 27th, 2014 in Zion Lutheran Church. Rev. Ben Buchanan officiating.
