He was born on June 5, 1933, in Dubuque, son of Edward and Mary (Shroeder) McClain .

He served with the Army during the Korean Conflict in Korea. Ed was an avid boxing fan. He was a boxer in the military and enjoyed attending boxing matches. Ed especially loved being with his family.

Surviving are five daughters, Billi Jo (Louis) LuGrain, Dawn M. (Dwane) Redfearn and Sheree (Rich) Hall, all of Dubuque, Sheila (Denny) Ehlers, of Moline, Ill., and Kelley (Dan) Fleege, of East Dubuque, Ill; 16 grandchildren; a sister, Marion M. Arensdorf, of Dubuque; a brother, Duane L. (Anne) McClain , of Dubuque; his ex-wife and friend, Karen McClain , of Dubuque; two special nieces, Kathy Weipert and Mary Jean McNamer, both of Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Ericka McClain ; a brother, Donald McClain ; a brother-in-law, Melvin Arensdorf Sr; a nephew, Melvin Arensdorf Jr; and a special loving and long- time companion of many years, Jeanette Williams.

Death23 April 2012Duane Leroy McClain died on 23 April 2012 at age 76 Duane L. "Wayne" McClain, 76, of 586 Almond St., died at 9 p.m. Monday, April 23, 2012, at Dubuque Nursing & Rehab Center, following a courageous six-month battle with cancer.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 26, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, with Pastor John Hulsizer officiating. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Wayne was born on Feb. 17, 1936, in Dubuque, son of Edward and Mary (Schroeder) McClain. He married Ann Schmerbach on Sept. 15, 1956.

He worked for Dubuque Park and Recreation tree crew. He retired after 40 years of outstanding service on March 27, 1998.

Wayne enjoyed playing euchre with his friends, reading and trying to win the lottery. He was a devoted father. He was very much loved and will be missed by all who knew him. Kathy and her dad are together again.

Surviving are his wife, Ann; four children, Ron (Chris) McClain , Jerry McClain and Lori (Dennis) Weig, all of Dubuque, and Carol (Larry) Foht, of Benton, Wis; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Kathy; and son-in-law, Brian; two brothers, Donald and Eddie; and a sister, Marion.

In lieu of flowers, a Duane "Wayne" McClain Memorial Fund has been established.

Marion was born on December 16, 1931, daughter of Edward and Mary (Schroeder) McClain.

Marion married Melvin L. Arensdorf on December 19, 1947, in Dubuque, IA. He preceded her in death on July 27, 1992. Marion was a full time wife, mother and homemaker. She enjoyed reading and playing records with her family and singing along to country and western, old time and gospel music. Her greatest joy was spending one on one quality time with her children, she called it the "gift of time".

Robert served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He married Joyce A. Dayton on February 12, 1955, in Galena, IL. Robert was employed as a machine operator with the John Deere Dubuque Works for 30 years until his retirement. He was a member of U.A.W. Local 94. Robert enjoyed playing the guitar, riding horses and Harleys and camping with Joyce in Galena. He was a "Jack of all trades" and was always willing to help anyone who needed a hand.

Robert is survived by, his loving wife of 59 years, Joyce McClain, Dubuque, IA, his son, David (Christine) McClain, Peosta, IA, a grandson, Ryan R. McClain, Peosta, IA, a step-granddaughter, Taylor Rupp, Cuba City, WI, a sister-in-law,
Shirley McClain, Dubuque, IA, his goddaughter, Lisa Bastian, Chanhassen, MN, and many nieces and nephews.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, Patricia McClain in infancy and Lucille (Charles) Richardson and a brother Alfred McClain.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Dr. Hermann and Dr. Kirkendahl, especially his nurse, Kate, and Hospice of Dubuque for all of their wonderful care of Robert.

Mr. McClain was employed at John Deere Dubuque Works for 30 years, retiring in 1994.

He was born on Feb. 14, 1936, in Tennyson, Wis., son of Albert and Evelyn (Schaulk) McClain. He married Shirley J. Gustafson on June 18, 1955, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dubuque.

He served in the Iowa National Guard as a sergeant first class. While in the Guard, he was a member of the Governor Gray's Drill Team and the Top 3 Graders Club.

He was a member of the United Automobile Workers Local 94, the John Deere Retirees and Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

Al thoroughly enjoyed life. Always with a joke at hand, many knew him as a "character." He loved to laugh, and he loved to make those around him smile.

In the summer, he spent his weekends camping at Palace Campground, where he had a permanent site. Sitting around a campfire with family and friends, telling stories and singing songs to a guitar was his favorite pastime.

Al enjoyed traveling with his wife, Shirley, and many lifelong friends. He treasured a very special vacation they took to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, with his daughter, Lisa and her family.

Family was everything to Al. He was a caring husband and a kind and gentle father and grandfather to more than just his own. He had a genuine soft spot for all children and over the years was like a father or grandfather to many. He was a devoted son and brother. He especially cherished his brother, Robert, who was his dearest friend.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley McClain; two daughters, Lisa A. (Tim) Bastian, of Chanhassen, Minn., and Amanda M. (Clay) Kisting, of Dubuque; four grandchildren, Christina and Alyssa Bastian, Hunter Kisting and Colton Kisting, his newest grandson; a brother, Robert (Joyce) McClain , of Dubuque; a brother-in-law, Charles Richardson, of Dubuque; and many nieces, nephews and great friends.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Patricia McClain, in infancy, and Mrs. Charles (Lucille) Richardson.

Ann was born on January 17th, 1937, in Dubuque, Iowa, the daughter of Raymond & Gertrude (Winders) Schmerbach. She graduated from Senior High School and was united in marriage to Duane “Wayne” McClain on September 15, 1956.

She started her working career at Sears where she worked for 20 years and then was employed by the Archdiocese of Dubuque until her retirement at age 67.

Some of Ann’s greatest pastimes include gathering for bingo at the KC Hall on Thursday nights. Along with her husband, she enjoyed playing cards with friends/family and then after her husband’s passing played with her friends in a card club. She looked forward to her monthly luncheons with her brothers & sisters and also her Friday night dinners out. She liked to go on bus trips and try her luck at the casino. She loved life and the people around her. Ann was very proud of her children & their families. Her favorite saying was “Love you to the moon & back”.

She is survived by her three children, Ron "Jonesy" (Chris) McClain, Lori (Dennis) Weig of Dubuque, and Carol (Larry) Foht of Benton, WI. 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren & 1 great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by her brothers Buster (MaryJane) and David (Penny); sisters Rosie (Tex), and Mary; sisters-in-law Sally, Roberta & Betty and brother-in-law Mick and her life-long best friend, Jackie Larkin.

Ann was preceded in death by her husband Wayne, son Jerry, daughter Kathy and her husband Brian. Her sisters, Shirley, Marilyn and her husband Mac, and her brothers Bobby, Kenny & Skip and brother-in-law Ron Walters.
